  1. This is a great post. I had gestational diabetes with my 3rd child- I had to check my blood sugar 4 times a day, eat a special diet (which I didn't do very well with) and take medication. This was a big wake up call for me because my father has been living with diabetes for years and I didn't think it would affect me. Thanks for the reminder to eat healthy. Keep Posting.

Oh yes, girl, been there done that. With my son in 1994, I had to actually shoot insulin in my leg while pregnant. With my daughter, I was placed on 1200 cal a day diet which was ugh! And yes I had to also do the prick your finger thing which was horrid to do four times a day. But we survived and I am careful with my diet now because they said when you have it while pregnant, your chances go up for developing it later. Thanks for reading!

  2. Those are great tips! My dad too is diabetic and from Mississippi too. He's being doing much better but I know this Christmas will be rough for him on the food front.

I'm really glad to see you post this. My own father was a juvenile onset diabetic, diagnosed at age 12. He was a very brittle diabetic, and the treatment in the 1950's & 60's were different than what we have today. Sadly, my father passed on shortly before what would have been his 42nd birthday. I watch my son very carefully, because it is genetic.

May your father continue to rest in peace! I feel that talking about diabetes is an important topic and I plan to blog about it at least once a month to keep the disease in the forefront.

Great blog, my dad has Adult onset diabetes and i know he finds it really hard at this time of year to stick to the foods he is allowed, thankfully he does manage not to over indulge.

It is a bit harder with my mum as she has steroid induced diabetes and is still trying to get to grips with it and has found herself slipping off the diet she has been given. I think what makes it so hard is that she has been told what & what she can't eat by the hospital after having a heart attack & then just when she was getting to grips with one lifestyle change they throw in some more rules. The best of it is if she would just take a step back she would realise that the diets are practically the same LOL There is a chance that when the steroids are reduced to a low enough dose that the diabetes could go away.

For Christmas dinner it will be a small amount of meat & potatoes & a ton of vegetables that i will be dishing out. Oh & low fat gravy LOL
