Ask my good friend who I went to see ‘Precious’ with in November in D.C. and he will tell you. I predicted that Mo’Nique would be nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award and she would win both.

That first part is indeed now true. Mo’Nique won her first ever Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mary Jones, the violently abusive and tormenting mother of Clarice ‘Precious’ Jones.

Her acting was brutal, harsh, and at some times, it made me physically ill. But in order to hit home the point of the story, Mo’Nique had to dig deep into her soul to deliver her performance. And she succeeded.

During her acceptance speech, she honestly spoke of her role and of the opportunity to play such a character. She also dedicated her award to other abuse victims; she had also been a victim of sexual abuse. She said, “I celebrate this award to everyone who has been touched. It’s now time to tell. And it’s okay.”

Other big winners of the night was the incomparable Meryl Streep who was nominated for two films, Julie & Julia and It’s Complicated and won in the later category. Mad Men won for best TV Drama, C. Michael Hall for best actor in a TV drama for Dexter, and Chloe Sevigny for her role on Big Love. Sandra Bullock won her first Golden Globe for her performance for The Blind Side as well as Drew Barrymore for her performance in Grey Gardens. Winner Robert Downey, Jr., best actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, had one of the most entertaining speeches of the night. Avatar won best picture, which saddened me because I felt ‘Precious’ was an overall better film. Maybe the Oscars will recognize it.

Ricky Gervais did a decent job hosting and had just the right amount of humor. Hollywood also lent their voices to the relief effort in Haiti by wearing ribbons of the colors of the Haiti flag and mentioning it during the program. Kudos to the producers for making sure it was mentioned, not only by the actors and actresses but by the Hollywood Foreign Press as well.
