A friend of mine called me earlier today and was quite upset. I asked her why she sounded so down and in the dumps and she said her Valentine’s Day left much to be desired. She then commences to tell me that she had been dating a new guy who showed a lot of promise. But the dealbreaker was when during their intimate Valentine’s Day dinner, he stayed on his phone tweeting the whole entire night.

She was livid. And I would be too.

Having Twitter on your mobile phone device is a good thing, but can be a bad thing as well. It gives you instant access to everyone in your Twitter stream, and I for one have found myself getting caught up in what is being said on Twitter when  I am on my phone.

It is addictive.

But during a date as special as Valentine’s Day, tweeting is indeed a no-no. To sit there the entire time tweeting and ignoring your date is not cool at all. If the conversation is boring or not interesting, strike up a topic. Don’t ignore your date by tweeting on the phone. And worse yet, if your date is following you and you are tweeting about the night’s events (or lack thereof) be mindful that they can SEE IT!

During a date, it’s best to keep your phone in your pocket or purse in order to concentrate on getting to know the other person better, or better yet, show them that they are what’s most important during this time.

Texting is also a no-no during a date unless it is an emergency of some sort. If you and your date have an understanding that it is okay to text and tweet during a date, that is fine as well. But make sure to communicate and discuss that. Don’t just assume that it is okay.

Some date rules should not be broken.

Suffice to say my friend is no longer seeing this guy.

What do you think about texting or tweeting during a date? Do you think this is a do or a don’t? Comment and let your opinions be heard.
