I am a glorified conference junkie and I am proud to say it. But don't let this post fool you---I cannot in any way attend all the conferences that I want to go to.

When I first began The Cubicle Chick two years ago, I had no idea that there were so many conferences out there pertaining to blogging and social media. It wasn't until I attended my first conference in the summer of 2010 that I saw the diverse list of conferences offered to us each year. With so much being offered, how does one narrow down the conferences that would most benefit them? It's a very difficult thing to do.

I am a glorified conference junkie and I am proud to say it. But don't let this post fool you---I cannot in any way attend all the conferences that I want to go to. Even with a sponsor helping defray some of the costs, it can still be quite taxing and time consuming to attend conferences. Add that I have a family at home that also have schedules and events they attend as well, so it's quite a balancing act. I generally go to conferences that have a track record for being exceptional events (meaning the word on the street about them is good), and ones that I can learn information from and network with others. Cost and location are also factors as well. For instance BlogHer and BlogWorld are both in NYC this year. And even though I love The Big Apple, I don't want to go there twice in a span of a few months. So I have to choose the best one for me and my needs.

So after a lot of thought and careful planning, these are the conferences I am planning to attend this year:

Propel! (Atlanta, March 10th)

Bloggy Boot Camp, (St. Louis, April 21st)

Type-A Parent (Charlotte, June 22-24th)

Blogging While Brown (Philadelphia, June 1-2)

BlogHer (New York City, August 1-2)

Show Me the Blog (St. Louis, October 19-20th)*

A lot can change as I perhaps garner sponsorship and travel opportunities, so this list may not be final. But for now, these conferences are listed in my calendar and I have already purchased my tickets for a few of them.

How can you select what conferences you should attend this year?

Money is always a factor as not everyone can garner a paid sponsorship to every conference event they would like to attend. I view attending a conference and paying for my ticket as an investment in my business. I also write it off as a business expense on my taxes (as well as all of my travel fees).

Content is critical too. Before I buy a ticket to a conference, I look for the content it will offer. The sessions, the speakers, the diversity. I want to feel that I will get something out of the event, no just go to be going.

Location is also key for me. I love attending conferences in a city I haven't spent a lot of time in so I can also use it as a vacation.

Reputation for conferences goes a long way. For me, if others are singing its praises, then it's something I want to attend for myself.

Beware of free conferences. I fell into a trap of that last year during a conference. The ticket was free so I thought, why not? But once I arrived and went to the sessions, it wasn't a well run conference. Some of the speakers advertised on the website and program weren't even there. So free isn't always good. Do your homework.

What conferences are you planning to attend this year? And what conference should I attend that is not on this list?

For the past 2 years, I have started the year off with a list of goals that I wanted to achieve with my blog. I have hit many of those goals and benchmarks, but still struggle with some.

So here is my list of my 2012 Blogging Resolutions:

Build a Community:

Networking and building relationships with people is the heart of a blog really. You don't want people to just read your blog, but to learn and grow with it, and share it with others. You want to connect and inspire. I think once you stop doing that, it is hard to evolve. I want to work harder with building my Cubicle Community and reaching out my readers and those who support me and what I do. And not only do this online, but build relationships offline as well.

Do the Hard Work:

I really want to expand the coverage and material on my blog to include reporting and case studies. I know this may sound boring, but I think in reporting on issues as they relate to family, parenting, work, and personal life, I could really help people, myself included. Doing the hard work with researching and interviewing sources for these posts will really make the piece valuable and informative.

Shout Out Other Bloggers:

There are so many bloggers that I love and respect. Some of them are well-known, but there are some that don't have a large readership, but have awesome blogs. I want to share these blogs with my followers an my readers and give my support to them in any way that I can.

<del>No Fillers</del>:

There isn't a blogger who has been blogging for over 2 years that hasn't been guilty of writing a filler piece---that is, the piece that you write for your blog that was written just because you needed a new blog post. It's not your best work and isn't something that you even worked hard on. It's just a filler piece, something put up to say that you have a new blog post. I have done this before a few times and I don't want to do it anymore. If I don't have anything to post, then I simply won't post. No more filler pieces.

Be More Social at Events:

I am a pretty social chick, but I could do better. As someone who speaks to others on the virtue of networking at events, I have been guilty of sticking with those I know instead of branching out---how can I tell others not to do this when I do it myself? This year, I will be out there more, which means that yes, I will probably get on your nerves with my in your face networking.

I think that about covers my Blogging Resolutions for this year, although I reserve the right to add more to this list when I see fit.

What are your Blogging Resolutions for the New Year? I shared mine, so it's only fair that you share yours too!

Blogging and social media have become my passion and I enjoy gatherings that celebrate the genres as well as encourage learning, networking, and growth. When it comes to conferences that involve bloggers, BlogHer is the epitome---it's the Super Bowl of blogging conferences for women, so not being a part of it can make you feel left out. Luckily, I am able to attend thanks to my sponsor, Chicalogic.

Chicalogic has been a huge supporter of my blog and I enjoy working with them on spreading the message about their products. Chicalogic is a Latina owned company that specializes in creating affordable technology products for women. Their Chica PC Fix helps speed up the performance of your PC and their Chica PC Shield helps guard your PC against spam, malware, and other harmful bugs. I have used both products on my Vaio and they have worked fabulously.

As Chicalogic is my sponsor for BlogHer, I will be at the conference working to get more bloggers familiar with the Chicalogic brand and campaigns.

This is my first BlogHer conference so I am incredibly excited. I have been trying not to get too overwhelmed, but I can't help but feel a sense of nervousness. I don't know what to expect, but I do know that if anything, this will be an incredible opportunity to connect with other bloggers, which is what I enjoy the most.

If you are going to BlogHer '11, let's make sure to connect. I will be live blogging, tweeting, and updating my Facebook and Google + regularly, so I am hoping to meet a lot of the people behind some of my favorite blogs.

BlogHer '11 takes place August 5th through August 6th in San Diego, California.

I cannot wait!

A guest blog post is when you write a blog post of original material on someone else's blog. Simply put, you are working as a guest author for a site and bringing your voice and originality to its readers.

I figured I would do a blog post on this subject because I have been asked this question three times in the past week by three different people. Before I go into my answer, I thought I would break down what a guest post is and the positive things that can come about when you guest blog on someone else's site, or they guest blog on yours. Then I will get into the nuts and bolts of the question and give my honest assessment.

A guest blog post is when you write a blog post of original material on someone else's blog. Simply put, you are working as a guest author for a site and bringing your voice and originality to its readers. A guest blog is a great thing because it allows you to expand your audience to another blog (and therefore gain some readers who will follow you back to your blog) and it shows that you have the capability of becoming an "expert" or "source" in a particular field or genre.

The advantages of having someone guest blog on your blog are tenfold---if you are in need of material, a guest blog post is perfect to fill in the gaps. Again, just as the person guest blogging may gain new readers, you may also get increased traffic from the guest blogger's audience when the link to your blog is shared with their readers.

A guest blog post is usually a win/win for both parties.

Now to get to the answer, let me first say this. There is a big difference between a guest blog post and being a contributor for another site or blog. Guest posts often do not include payment. It is done because the rewards are plentiful for both parties, so payment is usually a moot point. I have had several guest posts from guest bloggers on The Cubicle Chick and I have never paid them. They usually write a guest post on my site and then I will turn around and do a guest post on their sites, or vice versa.

When you contribute to a blog (which is different from a being a "guest blogger"), then payment is usually standard. I freelance or contribute to several blogs and sites online and I get paid for my services as a contributor or author on the site. This is usually done when you contribute or write more than one piece for a blog or website.

Payment for a contributor may vary---there is no stock answer as to "how much should I charge for a post?". There is a lot that goes into it---your influence, the popularity of your blog or your writing, the clarity in which you write (i.e is it grammatically correct and free of spelling errors and well edited), the experience of your writing (i.e. have you written for other sites and the frequency in which you do so), and of course the quality of the pieces you produce. When I first started contributing, I got paid as low as $15 per original blog piece or article. Of course that amount has changed considerably, but at the beginning, I was trying to get my weight up (with the body of work I had on other sites), so $15 was okay for me.

You have do ask what you feel your work is worth.

Are there bloggers who pay other bloggers to guest post (meaning contribute a singular post)---probably. But in my opinion, I would not pay for a guest blog on my site, especially when I am returning the favor. However, if a site is looking for a regular contributor, then yes, payment should be made.

I have had several contributors to my site that have been paid based on the amounts of posts written. Since they were contributors, I felt their time should be compensated.

So, in review, the answer to the question at hand is nothing (but if they insist on paying you, then go for it). However, if you are asked to be a contributor of a site, you should be paid. Make sure you know your worth!

Soaking up as much information I can about this platform is something that I can't seem to get enough of, so I was excited to learn that there would be a Wordcamp in Chicago, which isn't too far from St. Louis (the St. Louis WordCamp is taking place next week while I will be at BlogHer, more on that later). WordCamp is "a gathering of all things WordPress" and includes sessions for users and developers. If you are a WordPress geek like me, then attending a WordCamp at least once should be on your radar.

This year's WordCamp Chicago (this is the 3rd year) will take place Sat., July 30th and Sun., July 31st. The tracks I am most interested in attending are the ones that are geared to those of us who are using WordPress for our businesses, and of course getting better SEO results for the information on your blog. Tickets for WordCamp Chicago were only $40, so it was worth the investment.

I will also be doing a little bit of sightseeing when I am in Chicago. I am taking my daughter and mother-in-law with me so they can enjoy the sights as well. I am looking forward to a weekend filled with learning, networking, and fun.

You have to be living under a rock if you haven't heard about Google+ (Plus), the newest social network under the massive internet conglomerate. Google+ is now open to all of its users after being closed off to a selected few who could shell out invites to those cool enough to be included in the network. Google has set its sights on making a popular and user friendly social network after bombing on its predecessor, Google Wave, that tanked before it got off to a good start. Google+, some think, is a more stripped down (or bastard child) of Facebook that boasts the best of Facebook and Twitter, and so far, I really like it.

But just like any new thing on the innerwebs, there are always those that simply don't get it---I mean, how many times did you have to explain to someone how to use Twitter before people finally caught on? Google+ has its advantages and I can see it being one of the most used social networks, especially since they learned from their unfortunate Wave debacle in 2009. There are skeptics that aren't ready to get on Google+, or those that are on it and spend more time complaining about it than they do using it.

Here are my 5 things people should stop doing when referring to Google+.

1. Complaining that anyone can add you on Google+:

Um, unless your account is private on Twitter, then anyone can follow you there as well. Not sure why people have an issue with anyone adding them because Twitter is the model for this feature on Google+. You add people that you follow and to your circle who you think add value to your stream, and if they want, they can add you to their circle or circles. Facebook is more closed, in that you have to approve people to be your friend, but Google+ allows for easy access---if you are using it to network, especially for business purposes, then of course you should be accessible to people. Duh!

2. Comparing Google+ to other social networks:

It's a given that Google+ is a relative of both Twitter and Facebook---, picking it apart and comparing it to these platforms is a waste of time. I am already hearing data that Google+ is going to have more users than Facebook in a set amount of time, but this is social media---anything goes and anything can happen. Who would've thought in 2006 that Myspace would be a dinosaur in 2011?

3. Being a hater:

Come on, social media is about creating new ways for us to engage and network. I can understand you not jumping on the Google+ bandwagon, but why complain about it? If it isn't your thing, carry on. No need to frown.

4. What is Google+?:

You are on the internet, folks. If you have a question, it's easy to get an answer. You don't know how many times I've been asked what Google+ is. And it's not that I don't mind sharing information, but it's easy to get an answer on your own. Use Google to find out what Google+ is. Or better yet, sign up and play around with it yourself to get firsthand experience.

5. Discounting Google+ as a viable social network:

When social networking, you need to be everywhere. I want to reach as many readers as possible so you won't find me NOT being on something that can create opportunities for me to engage with others. If you aren't on Google+, then you aren't using social media to your advantage. Create your page via your email address (before someone else takes your name) and explore. You need to be everywhere your readers are (if you are a blogger) so saying no to a viable social network is a big no/no, in my humble opinion, of course.

Google+ is off to a running start and I see myself using it more and more for my blog and to connect with others. Are you on Google+? What are your thoughts? And lets connect: Add me under The Cubicle Chick.

So if by chance you are following me on any of my various social networks, then you may have read that I am in the City of Angels for the Blogging While Brown conference. This conference celebrates bloggers of all races, spectrum, and colors in terms of social media and blogging, and this weekend is sure to be fun, fabulous, and educational.

I am with my girls Kesha (@xdwebsolutions) and Roshini (@glamazini) who are my roommates during the the conference. Add to that my fellow #sistertribe chick Andrea (@smartmoneychick), and we have a group of girls who are sure to get into major trouble while we are here.

This weekend has been deemed Black Social Media Weekend and consists of the conference, the Black Weblog Awards, and other gatherings and events taking place while we are here.

And while we have been here, it hasn't been all business. We visited In-N-Out Burger for the first time and we also enjoyed a wonderful cocktail reception sponsored by Pom Wonderful at The Capital Grille at the Beverly Center hosted by Duo Dishes and Bren Hererra.

Here are a few pictures of our first day in Los Angeles:

....yes, it's true. I am in the August issue of Glamour magazine with the lovely and talented Heidi Klum on the cover. If you look deep within the issue on page 122, you will see a quote from little old me!

Back in April, I was contacted by a writer from Conde Nast, the company that publishes Glamour, regarding my blog post, My Boss Takes Credit for My Work. The writer asked me to tell the story behind my post, and after a few emails back and forth, I was told I may or may not be included in an upcoming issue of the glossy magazine.

Fast forward a month when I was then contacted by a fact checker who was working on behalf of Conde Nast and asked me a few questions to determine if I really gave the information given. A month and a half later, I am in the magazine.

Truth be told, I thought it was going to be a longer piece regarding horrible bosses and now see that it is only a quick blurb with my first name. No mention of my blog but that is okay---I am thrilled to be mentioned in the magazine.

And just in case you don't believe that this is me (since there are quite a few of us who spell their names with a "Y" like I do, I included the original email screenshot----just in case a hater has something to say! (yes, I am being sarcastic)

Run, don't walk, to your nearest bookstore and purchase the August issue of Glamour! I am in it and damnit, let me have my moment! LOL.

On the real, though, this goes to show you that even when you don't think anyone is reading your blog, people are watching. The content of your blog may be used in a magazine piece, or spark a subject for an article.

Write your blog like it will be seen!

Smooches!

After attending many conferences over the last year or so, I consider myself to be a conference veteran. I have a boot camp type of ritual that I go through before every conference to make sure that I have everything I need, especially since most of the conferences I attend are in different cities, and I am not able to go back home and retrieve what I left. You don't have to go to the conference with bags full of items, but you do want to make sure you have the essential items you need in order to make your conference experience effective.

Here is my list of 6 things you must take with you to a conference:

Updated business cards: I cannot stress to you how important it is for you to have updated business cards with all of your contact information included on it. Forget the scratching out old numbers and email addresses, or not including your phone number or Twitter handle. Have all of the ways to contact you listed correctly and make sure you don't make the mistake I made earlier this year. Order your cards several weeks in advance so that if there are errors or typos, you can get them corrected before the conference begins.

Laptop AND iPad/Tablet: When attending a conference, most allow for wifi access so that you can live blog, tweet, takes notes, etc. Make sure you have a fully charged laptop or tablet with you at the conference. Don't just rely on your tablet, however, because you may still need your laptop to do other tasks that a tablet may not allow you to do. You can always leave the laptop in the hotel room and use it when needed. Not bringing it at all may be a FAIL.

Chargers: Having all of your chargers with you is critical to being efficient in a conference. Make sure that you have a bag that holds all of your chargers, and carry that bag inside on your carry on luggage on your flight if your are flying. You can also use something like iGo which allows you to charge your smartphone on the go without having an outlet. This is perfect when you are unable to secure a section by the wall during the conference sessions.

Elevator Pitch: You will meet a lot of people, many of whom will not be familiar with you or what you do. Make sure you have your elevator pitch ready so that you can easily say what you do in 30 seconds or less. Make sure that you are concise yet fluent when giving your pitch and practice it a few weeks before conference with others so that you are on point and ready to go.

Room for the Swag: Conferences these days create an opportunity for you to take home freebies and swag (or schwag), and lots of it. You want to be able to take all of your goodies with you, so make sure you leave room in your luggage for the freebies you are sure to acquire. Bring an extra duffle bag or large tote, which can easily be folded up in a suitcase, and used on the flight back home. The extra baggage cost may be worth it. :)

Calendar of sessions/events: During a major conference, there are so many things going on. So it's important for you to plot your course and determine what sessions and presentations you want to attend before you arrive at the venue. Put your chosen sessions on your smartphone calendar or Outlook so that you know where to be at what time. Also, include any parties or get togethers on your calendar as well. You can also synch your calendar with other friends and conference goers when using Google Calendar or Outlook.

Going to conferences are great for your business and for your brand, and having a plan of attack always helps. I hope these 6 tips will help you during your next conference attendance.
