Today marks the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., and his 'Dream' of all of us co-exisiting in society as equals and as one. It's important for me to help instill dreams and goals for my children, so they grow up knowing that with hard work and determination, anything can be in their reach. Last weekend, my daughter and I worked on a Dream board (or vision board) activity, to help her visually see her goals. It was something fun for us to do, but also was a lesson in teaching my daughter to dream and visualize what it is she wants. Even though she is 7, she isn't too young to have goals. Wow, 2012 is officially here! How did you ring in the New Year? I spent it with my significant other in St. Louis, eating with friends, and then going out on the town to First Night St. Louis 2012 in Grand Center in midtown. There was a band, food, hot chocolate, fun, acrobats, and other unique things to check out. And of course there were the fireworks, which pop off after the countdown ends to the New Year. Here are a few of my photos from tonight's event.

A Girl’s Best Friend: A New Year’s Eve Memory of My Poodle

When I was 16, I didn't have much of a New Year's Eve. I was living in Florida at the time and my parents had just separated. I was also new to the area and didn't have many friends, so when the holidays made their way around, I didn't have a lot of people to spend it with. And since I didn't have a license and no car, I couldn't get around much. I remember looking out the window wishing I had somewhere to go or someone to be with to ring in the New Year. It seemed like it was such a lonely time. The only thing I had in my life then was my poodle, Pebbles. She was the ray of sunshine I needed during this lonely and transitional period. Pebbles was given to us by a friend of my dad's. She was an older dog, but very loveable, and as precious as she could be. I didn't grow up with a dog, so having her took some of the pain away of being alone during what should've been a fun time. She took a negative and made it a positive, and I will always remember her for that. She and I watched Dick Clark's New Year's Eve special and she watched me dance to Paula Abdul and a few other of the guests' songs. When the clock struck midnight, it was Pebbles who I hugged and who reciprocated her love, signaling in 1992. She was an amazing friend, and looking back on it now, even though I was at home by myself without a friend in sight, it was her who showed me the most love. The bond that we had at that time surpassed anything I had in a real life friend. It was loving, supportive, kind, and unending. I would be so lucky to have that type of friendship in my life right now. Less than a year later, Pebbles got really ill and was diagnosed with cancer. After a few months of trying to take care of her, my mom decided to have her put down, because at that time, Pebbles was suffering. It was so sad to see her go, but I knew she was going to be in a better place. My family doesn't have a dog now, but we may be getting one in the upcoming year. The memory of Pebbles, and knowing how she was there for us when we needed her, makes me want to give that same gift to my son and daughter. We will see if we get another dog (I am not sure if I want the task of taking care of a pet), but if we do, I am sure that a poodle will be the way we go. It’s Better to Give Than to Receive

Christmas is just a few short days away, and it still remains one of the most special days of the year. Whether you are religious, spiritual, or none of the above, Christmastime is all about love and family. No matter your religious affiliation, there are few people that do not value family. Families are the rock and the glue that holds us together. It is easy to get caught up in the pomp and circumstance of the Christmas holiday, as well as the commercialization that goes with it. The presents, the sales, the swarming of malls. It can seem like this is all about money and materialistic items. But for me, Christmas is about two things---the birth of Jesus and spending time with family, giving thanks for everything that we have been blessed with all year. For me, Christmas is not about what I get, but what I give to others. I love to see the look on people's faces when I give them a gift, or I am able to help them out in any way that I can. There are many of my friends that aren't in the best of spirits during this holiday. There are also some close people in my life that continue to go through trials and tribulations personally. Whatever I can do to help them is what I look forward to most. Lending a hand is what we were put on this earth to do. I simply love giving to those who I love. I hope that you and your family have the best Christmas ever. And that you remember, beyond the gifts and money spent, the real reason for the season. Merry Christmas to you all!

Christmas ‘Cube Candy Cane’ Nails: OPI Muppets & Cha-Ching Cherry

It's Christmastime, so what better way to 'Tis the Season, than with a new manicure that is fresh and fab with the colors of the season? Last year, I went all out with greens, and reds, and whites. This year, for my Christmas mani, I kept it simple, with a French Manicure that is remixed with two of my favorite OPI colors---Cha Ching Red and Excuse Moi (included in the OPI Muppets Collection). Here are a few photos of my holiday manicure. Simple, but also quite fabulous with red and glitter.

OPI's Cha-Ching Cherry was applied to my tips in the form of a French Manicure. Then Excuse Moi was added over Cha-Ching Cherry to create a bright, sparkly look that is perfect for this time of year. A clear coat base was added over top on the full nail for a finish.
