Let me start off my post with this: social media is my passion. It's what I love to do! Yes, it is my job, but I really love working and interacting with people online and working with brands and clients, as well as writing and sharing on my blog. Which is why Klout is doing so well---it is measuring people's influence through their social network, and using that data to not only display to its users, but to link their users to brands and campaigns (and make a dollar or two). Anywho, last week, a lot of people had their briefs and bikinis in a bunch when their Klout scores began to decline. Klout changed their algorithm (the way they measure the data in which they receive) and many people's scores went down. I am not one to check my Klout score on a daily or even weekly basis (I check mine about once a month), but indeed, my score also went from a 71 to a 57. I was a little annoyed with that too, but I checked other social media friends' scores, and I saw that their scores dropped too and we were all hovering around the same number. That was that. I believe if someone is nagging you about your Klout score, or using that data only to determine how "influential" you are or to decide whether or not they want to work with you, then they are doing themselves a disservice. No one tool can really effectively measure someone's influence online---like anything, numbers can be skewed. The best way to truly see how well someone is doing online in terms of their voice and influence, you have to look at all tools available. Their Klout score, Page Rank, Edge Rank, Alexa, follower numbers, Compete (ugh), engagement, et al. It is with ALL of this data that you can best determine influence. But keep in mind OFFLINE influence is important too, and should be factored into this design. Klout cannot measure your offline influence at all. So in my humble opinion, Klout is much to do about nothing. Yes, it's a great tool, but it is not the end all to be all, so no one should be upset if their scores go up or down. Another thing that I simply do not like about Klout is that it encourages its users to get their scores up by engaging others with higher Klout scores. This is not the way to create a great social media plan. A true connector in social media engages everyone, not just the people at the top. Shame on Klout for encouraging this type of behavior. According to a recent study, Americans spent a collective 53 billion hours on Facebook during the month of May. Let's take that in for a second. 53 billion hours. Could you imagine what could be accomplished if we devoted that much time to say----curing cancer, working on the economic crisis, creating jobs, or simply being productive citizens? It's amazing what numbers can do to bring a perspective to a point. We (and I am talking about myself as well) seem to be obsessed and overly occupied with social media. Some of us would rather update our statuses than actually DOING SOMETHING. I am not by any means stepping on a high horse, because trust me, I am guilty as charged. But what would life be without Facebook? What could we be doing with that 53 billion hours other than sitting on Facebook, refreshing our screens to see if anyone has liked our latest online manifesto? Twitter is more my poison than Facebook is, but I'd take a gamble that a lot of time is being spent coming up with 140 character anecdotes as well. And the more I say I am not going to be online as much, the more I find myself online. Looks like someone needs to unplug. (Raises hand) What are our other online vices? According to Nielsen (who is responsible for the figures indicated in this post), 723.8 million minutes are spent on Blogger, 623 million minutes was spent on Tumblr, 565 million minutes were spent on Twitter, and 325 million minutes were spent on LinkedIn. 70% of Americans on the Internet use Facebook. So if by chance you are following me on any of my various social networks, then you may have read that I am in the City of Angels for the Blogging While Brown conference. We visited In-N-Out Burger for the first time and we also enjoyed a wonderful cocktail reception sponsored by Pom Wonderful at The Capital Grille at the Beverly Center hosted by Duo Dishes and Bren Hererra. Yesterday, I was invited to a Cardinals' Social Media event in which we were given a presentation by the team manager John Mozeliak and other Cardinals executives. Social media is where it's at these days, and is as just as important as traditional media outlets. Bloggers have become the influencers---and if the Cardinals organization wants to get their message out, who better to go to than the ones who have a true reach and following in the area? Here are some pictures of the event from different vantage points including the outside of Busch Stadium, the Cardinals Club, the Jack Buck Suite, and the baseball field. It was announced that the next Social Media event will be held on May 17th. I will bring you more information about this event as I receive it. By the way, we won the baseball game 2 to 0. Go Cards!
