I often say that being a mom is the toughest job you will ever love. You are the nurturer, the provider, the strength, the caretaker, the rock—to your family, you are everything and then some. There are plenty of days that we go unnoticed and unrecognized for all that we do, but Mother’s Day is the time where we get to bask in the fruits of our labor. Avon Representative Bianca Harris understands the importance of being in the business of being mom while making women feel and look beautiful. Here’s her story:

Bianca spent four years working as a Project Manager in a mostly male work environment. After missing the monumental first year of her youngest son’s development and firsts, she walked away from it all. Leaving behind her 14 hour work days, she became room mom for both of her children, something she wasn’t able to do when she was working full-time. She also embarked on entrepreneurship with AVON becoming an Independent AVON Representative.

Bianca forged ahead with her business while keeping her eye on the most important aspect of her life–her children and her family.

“Motherhood is very rewarding. There is nothing like it…however…it can have some slow, redundant moments. Avon allows moms to keep their current schedule and become an actual businesswoman without compromising her family time, value or contributions to her daily life. I am a full time Avon Representative, but I also am the room mom for both of my sons’ classes, I am a Zumba Instructor, and I am a chairperson on my homeowner’s association board. I have been able to do all of these all the while selling Avon”.

AVON makes it easy for mothers who are juggling a variety of duties to become their own boss. According to Bianca:

“The startup cost is another feature that is enticing to moms. $10 to start a business that can be the most fun and most rewarding thing a mother could do outside of motherhood is not a bad deal at all! If you get on a good team, you become part of a community of networking women that support your success and want to see you succeed. You would never be by yourself in this adventure”.

So, what is the best part of being an AVON Representative?

“The biggest aspect about selling Avon is that there is no one day like the next. Your daily experience can be different from meeting new clients, the opportunities you create through local events, partnering with local businesses, recruiting and empowering other women to do the same as you, or contributing to the community by fundraising, donations and lots more”.

“I have done a flash mob with Avon, and won the Makeup Maven contest for my division. Avon flew me to New York for 3 days (all expenses paid) and treated me like a QUEEN! Now, I am on the road for a chance to win a new car! The opportunities are endless and the sky is the limit”.

Bianca not only enjoys selling AVON, but is a big fan of their products too.

“In color (makeup) it’s the Cream Eye Shadow Primer, Big Color Eye Pencil (in Vanilla), Liqui Glide Eyeliners (ALL OF THEM!). They are long lasting, and less than $6.00! In the fragrance area, my current favorite is Fergie’s “Viva.” This has a soft but fierce scent without being fruity or floral. The new fragrances from Avon have all done well in my sales! In bath & body, the Fresh & Smooth hair removal (both face and body) for sensitive skin has a permanent place in my beauty tool kit”.

“The Skin So Soft Bug Guard are a MUST for me and my family. I love the smell, the effectiveness of the repellant and the sunscreen that it gives. One product that can do the job of 3….oh yes, sign me up! With Skincare – Anew Rejuvenate line / Anew Advanced Retexturizing Peel / Genics and the invigorating pore scrub have helped my skin tremendously. I suffer (or did) from adult Acne and the most well-known and well-advertised skincare products did nothing for my skin but make it worse. I was VERY surprised, and lucky, that Avon’s skincare has my skin looking the best it’s EVER has!”

And while Mother’s Day has passed, you can still give the gift of AVON to the mom in your life.

“Why not give a gift from the company whose 126 year history has been focused around empowering women. Why not purchase a token for the special women in your life from a company that has contributed over $700 billion dollars to breast cancer research, been a strong advocate for speaking out against domestic violence, and has allowed over 6.9 million women (and men) the opportunity to have the dream of owning their own business?”

“You aren’t just giving her a product, you are giving her a piece of history, a symbol of quality, and the truest form of appreciation from the Representative that aided in your purchase”.

Bianca Harris has certainly found her calling and understands the business of being mom and an entrepreneur.

“Moms are a key essential factor in the success of my Avon business. As a mom – I am proud to be a representative and show my children that success can start within, but that it starts by choosing the right path. Avon is my right path”.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. And as you may be scrambling to find the perfect gift for the moms in your life, I want you to take a moment and reflect on the best advice your mom has given you. While most of us cherish the gifts we receive as moms, it is the advice, the wisdom, and the lessons that we’ve learned from our moms and mom figures that are most priceless. It has shaped us into who we are today.

When I was younger, my mother used to tell me to never make a promise that I couldn’t deliver. She wanted me to understand that my word was my bond, and if I promised to do something, I better well do it. Years later, I still remember this statement and try to live by it on a daily basis. It has become a mantra for the way that I live, and it is something that I have also shared with my children.

Mother’s Day has become a time in my family that not only we celebrate, but we also relish in past memories. Each year, Mother’s Day is more important as we see the elder mothers in our family through another year.

To help you remember the fond memories of the advice your mom shared with you, and to celebrate Mother’s Day, Coupons.com is giving away a $50 Sephora e-gift card on my site. To enter to win the Sephora e-gift card, simply leave a comment below sharing an example of advice your mother gave to you. You must also ‘Like’ Coupons.com on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only, void where prohibited. The giveaway ends on Thursday, May 9th, 2013 at 7p, CST. One (1) reader will be selected at random and will be notified via email address given. If the winner does not claim their prize within 48 hours, another winner will be selected.

Being a mother is one of the greatest gifts! And being able to rely on our mother’s advice when we need it is an amazing present that keeps on giving. Happy Mother’s Day to you and yours!

Being a mother is the toughest job you will ever love. Through the cheers, jeers, and tears, I’ve been blessed with two incredibly wonderful children. My oldest son is now living in Los Angeles after graduating last year from high school. He has his eyes set on Hollywood and becoming an actor or musician; he wants to be in the entertainment business, and as his mother, I support anything positive that he wants to do. He is just embarking on a life out on his own, and this is the first birthday that we’ve spent apart. It’s truly bittersweet.

On this day, just 19 years ago, I gave birth to a chubby baby boy with beautiful brown eyes, dimples, and head full of black curls. As soon as my eyes laid on his, it was immediate earth shattering love. The kind of love I never thought I would experience at 18 years old, anyway. My pregnancy had been one filled with drama, desertion, and and doubt, but it didn’t matter anymore. It would be me and him, against the world, and I felt so proud to be blessed with such a happy and healthy baby boy.

I’ve blogged many times about the trials and tribulations we both experienced as a teen mother. But none of those events and episodes dampened the love for my child, or his love for me. With every mistake I made, tear I shed, and wish I dreamed, he was there next to me saying that it would be okay. I’m sure his young eyes saw more than he should, but I know that because of that, it cemented our bond. A bond that no one will be able to sever.

As a young mom, I often overcompensated when I could. He was probably given more than he should’ve been at times. I allowed him to be privvy to conversations and information that he had no business being a part of. When you are a mom, you make mistakes; and when you are a young mom, well those mistakes are raised tenfold. I did the best that I could being both a mom and a dad through those single years, and it was a lot. But my son never judged me, never wavered. I never knew unconditional love until I experienced it from my boy.

Now he’s all grown up, and we’re living apart. We speak on a daily basis but it’s not the same. He’s matured and grown during the few months he’s been away and I can’t help but to see that little boy naive boy I becoming a man. I long for the days when he used to call me Mommy and beg me to read him a bedtime story. Those days are indeed gone I suppose.

Being a mom on an “adult” is new territory for me. Loosening these apron strings hasn’t been easy, but I know for both of us to continue on in our lives, it has to be done. So each day, I get more and more strength to not over-parent, over-love, over-mom him. He probably has no idea that I lay awake many nights thinking of him, wondering if he is making the right choices. All I can rely on now is the fact that I parented him the best way I knew how; he’s earned his wings and now I can watch in the stands as he takes off and flies to his destiny.

The cheers are for how proud he has made me. Jeers for the times when I text and he doesn’t immediately reply. Tears as I mourn the little boy I used to be as I get to know the man that he is becoming.

I love you, Son. Happy Birthday.

I fell totally in love with Erica and Tina Campbell, the gospel group that is Mary Mary, during the first season of their reality television hit on WE TV. As a group, Mary Mary has been one of my favorites since their 2008 hit, Shackles. But seeing them up close and personal as they take on their careers, motherhood, marriage, pregnancy, and obstacles made me feel like they were my besties in my head. Erica and Tina are a lot like most of us—they long to have it all without sacrificing anything. As a longtime Cubicle Chick, I too have tried to have it all while juggling work, life, and play. And let me tell you this, it ain’t easy!

Season two of Mary Mary begins where last season left off. Erica is a new mom to a two month old baby while also mothering two little ones. Tina has three little ones of her own and is six months pregnant. They are both on the road to promote their newest effort, Go Get It, and the strain is beginning to show. Eventually, something is going to have to give.

Which brings me to this question: as moms on the move, career ladies, wives, and professionals, can we have it all? Erica and Tina are a case study in progress and we are witnessing their conundrum first hand, an issue that a lot of us ladies face. For men, it’s easy. They aren’t expected to “have it all”, so this question would never be posed to them. But for women, we have so many hats that we have to juggle, and if we drop one ball, even for a second, we can end up disappointing someone—and disappointing ourselves.

The career life balance epidemic is real. For years, I tried to do it all. And for years, I did it, without even breaking a sweat. But over time, you can only go at a fast pace of trying to do it all. And when I did drop the ball, literally, everything else fell. It was when I evaluated what was really important to me that I began to stop “trying” to look like I was the perfect wife, mom, career woman, etc. and get back to basics.

What’s a career without family? Without a life outside of your career to enjoy it?

Erica and Tina as Mary Mary will are a testament that having a career, family, and a life takes work. And while it isn’t perfect and resolved within a one hour show, it’s real. And I think that we all can learn from them. When you put the most important things first, everything else seems to fall into place.

Being the best women we can be, while walking the tightrope called the balancing act, is a gift that we not only give to ourselves, but to others. As the sign in my kitchen states, “If Mama Ain’t Happy, Ain’t No One is Happy”. And it’s this happiness that we need in order to be the best moms, wives, and professionals we can be.

Now go get your blessing!

It’s situations like these that the three-time Grammy® award-winning gospel duo Erica and Tina Campbell face in Season 2 of WE tv’s hit series Mary Mary as they balance being recording artists, mothers, and wives. MARY MARY premieres Thursday, December 6 at 10|9c and moves to its regular timeslot on Thursdays at 9|8c, beginning December 13. On Thursday, May 17th, 2012, my son walked across the threshold of life by becoming a high school graduate. When he first entered the building, he was my 18 year old son who’s been with me for more than half of my life—and when he walked out, he became a dream fulfilled.

In April 1994, at 18 years of age, I gave birth via Cesarean to my firstborn. Having gotten knocked up at the age of 17 and becoming a mom at 18, I didn’t show much promise. As an only child, I had never even changed a diaper or made a bottle. Everything about being a responsible adult was foreign to me—add on being a mom and I pretty much felt that I was going to hit my breaking point before I had a chance to really live my life.

The first time I saw his face, I knew I would do anything I needed to to ensure our survival. It didn’t matter that I was a teenager. It didn’t matter that I would have to climb a mountain with incredible weight on my back. All that mattered was that I was not going to be a statistic. Somehow, some way, we would make it.

We laughed together. We cried together. We grew up together. I was the best mom I could be, and I did it mostly alone during his younger years. My family made sure that they supported me even though they didn’t agree with my choices. They kept it real and never sugarcoated anything. I didn’t have the type of mom that would allow me to go out every night while she watched my son. Hells no. She made it clear that my son was my child and my responsibility. So from that, I learned responsibility.

When my son got chicken pox, I got chicken pox because I never had it before. I was so wet behind the ears, but he loved me unconditionally. He never knew how “panicked” and “nervous” I was being his mom in those younger years. He was such a happy child and that made me happy.

So when I tell you that the tears flowed like a river when I saw him and the rest of the Class of 2012 in the auditorium–that is an understatement. All of that fear I had for 18 years was now being released, and he did it. We did it together.

Next is college and he will be embarking on a new life many miles away come the Fall. Right now, I am just trying to soak and bask in his greatness until it’s time for him to truly part and set out on his own adventure. I am sure I will cry then, too. And he will be embarrassed. But I won’t care because I love him just that much.

Bittersweet.

I have gone on record noting that my baby days are behind me. But every once in awhile, I get the familiar twinge of baby-itis, especially when I see a cute little baby, or one of my friends or relatives is expecting. What’s not to love about a new bundle of joy?

A few days ago, actress, television personality, reality star and the other half of the fabulous Tia and Tamera combo tweeted a photo of her growing baby bump. Tamera announced a few months ago that she was pregnant with her first child, which we now know is a boy. Her twin sister, Tia Mowry Hardict gave birth to her son, Cree, last year, and it was documented on the first season of their successful reality show, Tia and Tamera. Their second season began earlier this week on the Style Network.

Seeing the tweet of Tamera resplendent in all of her baby glory, glowing, and fabulous, made me feel a twinge of the baby-itis. At 36, I am not too over the hill to have a little one. But it may be a little awkward since I have a 18 year old who just graduated from high school and an 8 year old. Starting over again with a little baby isn’t something that I want to do—or is it? Last year, I even blogged about my wanting to possibly have another baby.

Of course, celebrities make having a baby looks so fabulous—and the rest of us know that isn’t the case. Most of us don’t have nannies, personal chefs, assistants, personal trainers, and all of the other fixins to make motherhood look so effortless and glamorous. And yet, we manage to do it just fine without the all of the bells and whistles.

So, yes I have baby fever—but I am sure it will be short lived. With all of the traveling that I do, as well as the hectic schedule I maintain, I don’t know how a baby would fit into all of that.

I do congratulate Tamera on her pregnancy and wish her and her husband the best. Motherhood is an amazing gift and blessing.

What do you think of Tamera Mowry-Housley’s pregnancy fabulousness?

Written By Guest Contributor, Sade Tagbo

A WORLD OF DISTRACTION

If you are like me, you’ve come to the conclusion that we are living in a world of distractions. Life is moving at the speed of light. Technology and media are putting more conveniences at our disposal – making us think we can do more in the 24 hours that we have. Every day, we cram more things into our already maxed-out schedules.

If you’re a woman, odds are that you do this even more than men do. As women, we pride ourselves in our ability to multi-task. We juggle careers, relationships, kids, household duties, friendships, social media, and hobbies.

We have it all. . .or do we?

RETHINKING MULTI-TASKING

The truth is that while we’re insanely busy, the lack of focus that comes from doing too much simultaneously is making us more disconnected in our relationships, putting stress on our minds and bodies, and we’re getting less and less done.

Without laser focus on what is most important and effective, you cannot do one thing well. Instead you do many things half-heartedly and with mediocrity. In other words, you do more, but achieve less.

Let’s say you are working on your new book; your cell phone rings and you answer it. That call may create a five minute interruption. When you are done with your call, it may take you up to ten minutes to recover and re-enter the flow of your writing. Now imagine that you have three or four such interruptions during a two-hour period: you stop to check your Facebook feed, your child wants your attention, someone sends you a request, etc.

Because your mind is on your book, you are not able to bring your full faculties to attend to any of the interruptions. In addition, all the interruptions take away your ability to fully focus on your writing. Your productivity goes down and you cannot get the time back. You end up losing in every area.

THE KEY TO SUCCESS

A lack of laser focus nibbles away at your time, making it impossible to achieve what you really want in life. That’s the bad news. The good news is, while a lack of focus will reduce your level of achievement, laser focus is the key to achieving balance and success in every area of your life. Lack of focus can be a slow drain on your dreams and goals, but laser focus will make your wildest dreams come true.

This is the truth behind laser focus. If you can understand and embrace this, you can restructure your life for laser focus. Here’s the secret to achieving laser focus:

You can only work effectively on one thing at a time. If you laser focus on one thing and do it with excellence, that one thing will create the opportunity for success in other things.

In other words, you can have it all, just not at the same time. You can create a connection with your spouse, and you can answer your email. You just cannot do both at the same time. Any attempt to multi-task will create failure in both areas. Don’t try it! Put the phone down and look in your spouse’s eyes. Or, ask them to wait until you are done with your email and then give them your full, undivided attention.

Apply this rule to everything you do. Do one thing at a time, making sure that you are present and purposeful and giving your all to what you have in front of you. When you stay completely focused on one task, you will eventually whittle that large pile of work down to nothing. As you focus, you find yourself moving into a state of flow where you do your best work.

Next week, I will share a few tips for building laser focus into your daily life.

This past weekend was not the first time I have traveled and have been away from my kids. But for some reason, this last trip really weighed heavily on me. Traveling to events and covering them for my blog and other outlets is now my job and is a way that I provide for my family. But it also takes me away from my the two people I love most in the world. And the more opportunities I receive to travel, the more time I am gone. The guilt is really beginning to set in.

During this last trip, I was away from my daughter for the first time on her birthday. That really made the trip bittersweet because of course I wanted to travel to Vegas to cover event and network, but I also wanted to be there for my daughter. And despite the fact that we celebrated her birthday last week with a very nice party with all of her friends, not being in town on her actual birthday made me feel guilty.

As mothers, we are the binding force of the family and the rock everyone seeks to lean on. In doing so, we put everything on our shoulders, even the things that are too heavy to carry. And the guilt is one of those things that we carry around with us whether we deserve to feel guilty or not—we are supposed to be there for our children in each and every instance. And when we can’t, some of us deal with it by placing blame on our situation or circumstances—if I wasn’t working, I could spend more time with the kids. If I didn’t have to be away, I could be there for my kids. When in essence, we are doing these things FOR our kids because we want them to have a nice life and to be able to take care of the household.

It’s a catch-22.

And as many times as I have traveled, I have never felt guilty about it until now. It could be that I have been on three business trips since the beginning of the year and we are only in February. Or it could be that missing being here on my daughter’s actual birthday was enough to bring everything into perspective.

The thing is this—travel may be a necessity of the business–it is for me. And the reason why I chose this business was that it allowed me to work at home and be there for my children on a daily basis.

When I am gone, my kids are in capable hands. Fathers can do just as good of a job parenting as we can, so when you begin to feel guilty about being away, please think about that.

I am a good mom. I’m not perfect, but I do the best that I can. And I am there for my children as much as I can be. I love them unconditionally and will always have their best interests at heart. And at the end of the day, that is what being a mom is all about.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! I really don’t know how I should feel about this. A part of me is like, 35 is nothing, girlie! You’ve made it! You have a 16 year old and a 6 year old and you are doing great things! Age aint nothing but a number and you have people telling you everyday you don’t look 34! But then there is this other side of me that is like WTH? Thirty-five? Is there something wrong with the calendar? How can this be?

I’ve never wanted to be one of the moms that wanted to be a teenager—dressing and acting like their children. I’ve always made it a point to embrace my age. Age is something you can’t avoid, no matter how much make-up or botox or plastic surgery one can get. That birth certificate doesn’t lie!

I guess it’s because I always thought I would be in a certain place at 35 and I am not quite there yet. I imagined that at my age, I would be a business owner with a five year’s worth of income in the bank and I would be living in a house that I owned in Miami or West Palm Beach. I would be at that point where I could say, yep, I’ve made it.

I am not there. Not even close. And while I am thankful for my life and all that I have, I am also forlorn—there is so much work for me to do. So much that I want to accomplish.

Will I ever get there? Will I ever be able to retire? Will I always be striving to get to that next step and not even be close?

Ugh.

So what. I am almost 35 and that is that. I cannot turn back the hands of time, nor do I want to. If I could only have time stand still for just awhile. I know—wishful thinking!

So in about 30 days, I will be 35. Me and my girlfriend Notorious Spinks (aka Yo-Yo) and I will be hitting the freeway and heading to Atlanta for a weekend of girls night out foolishness. My b-day falls right before Labor Day (Sept. 3rd, get the online orders ready now so you can ship my gifts!), so it will be party time!

You only get one 35th birthday!

The kids both have to be at different places at the same time, and you have have a few personal projects that you have been putting off because you never have time to finish them. What’s worse is the last two times you’ve had a “vacation”, you ended up spending most of the time working on your laptop and staying connected to the office with your Blackberry. When was the last time that you just let it all go?

Last year, I found myself at a crossroads. I was stressed out, worn out, burnt out, and then some. I had lost my passion for my craft and for my job and I didn’t know how to get it back. I did everything for everyone but failed to take care of myself. I had to make a decision about my future. If I was going to continue on the journey in which I started, I had to make some time for myself to work on my book, my blog, my projects.

I had to learn to say no to some things to keep my sanity.

Is it hard for you to say no? Do you often say yes to things to help others and then find that you cannot help yourself? I was there. It came a time that I had to say enough is enough. In order to succeed, I had to concentrate on me and starting what I finish.

I now do things in moderation. I don’t say yes a lot anymore—that is because I don’t want to find myself being overwhelmed again. I am about my brand and my blog first and foremost and then everything that I am involved in has to follow in line.

As women, we have the world on our shoulders. We tend to lead and follow without giving a thought about what that means in the long run. It usually means that we don’t have time for self but it doesn’t have to be like that.

Commit yourself to things that are in your plan and in your realm. If it doesn’t fit, don’t do them. And always leave time for yourself to be alone and enjoy time with YOU. When on vacation, enjoy it! Do not spend it working or even thinking about work. And last but not least, do not invite people in your life who do not understand that even though you are Superwoman and you can leap tall buildings in a single bound, does not mean that you have to do on a daily basis. Why make life any harder than it has to be?

Can you just let it all go? For at least a moment, enjoy life without a To-Do list, a schedule, email, or the workplace calling? These are the times. Enjoy your life. And get out of it what you put in.
