For the last six months, I have been trying to lose weight and get more active and fit. There are days when I succeed and other days when I fail. Losing weight and keeping it off is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do—it’s takes initiative, hard work, and determination. I really hope that this is the year when I finally shed these 20 to 30 pounds for good.

In the meantime, there are several women in the game who have lost weight and who have kept it off for good. Looking at these ladies really motivates me to get on my A game and start eating right and working out. Temporary fixes never seem to really work, but it looks as though these ladies have learned what it is they need to do to keep the weight off.

This is my list of 5 fab, slim, and trim celebrities who have lost weight and who look great. They serve as an inspiration for all of us that hard work really pays off!

Chaka Khan

When I say Chaka Khan is looking GOOD! She is putting women young and old to shame with her new physique and banging body that is still curvy and oh so fabulous. I recently blogged about Chaka’s 60 lb plus weight loss that she has achieved by first liquid dieting, then cutting out processed foods. The results have been amazing. Chaka is 59 and looking better than ever!

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson has always been beautiful to me, no matter her size. But her weight loss on the Weight Watcher’s plan has been phenomenal. With her new size comes a new swagger—she looks more confident and it shows. After 2 years of being smaller and healthier, Jennifer has managed to keep it off yet still look voluptuous and amazing on every red carpet. I love her!

Mo’Nique

A few months ago, we saw a new and “improved” Mo’Nique. The “Phat Girl” actress who always said that she didn’t mind being a big girl has recently changed her mind and has lost weight slowly over time with a rigorous workout regimen. You can’t help but look at Mo’Nique and see the new glow she is sporting. If she can lose some pounds, so can I!

Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley was my favorite on her season of Dancing with the Stars. Even when she was heavier, she managed to ballroom and Cha Cha like no one’s business. After losing a significant amount of weight on the reality dance show competition, Kirstie came out with her own weight loss products and has kept it off. She is looking glam and fab every time I see her, a testament to her hard work.

Raven Symone

Raven Symone is all grown up now and is sporting a slimmer figure. I am not sure what Raven is doing, but whatever it is, it is working. Working so much that she is on my Vision Board as a weight loss inspiration. I, too, like Raven, am top heavy, and we are shaped similarly, so seeing how she looks now gives me something to look forward to when I finally shed these 25 pounds for good.

Yes, celebs may have it easier than us regular folk (personal trainers, personal chefs, etc.) but the ones who are truly losing weight the right way have to still put in the work to keep it off. Kudos to these chicks doing their thing. I hope to see them at the finish line as I step up my fitness game.

I am a HUGE Chaka Khan fan and have been since I was a little girl. My parents were really into music so I grew up listening to so many different types of sounds. Rufus and Chaka Khan were always in heavy rotation on my mom’s record player. Tell Me Something Good, Sweet Thing, and I’m Every Woman were tunes that I would two-step to while my mom would play it during our Saturday cleaning house activities. Chaka was (and still is) a part of my life, musically!

So when I saw her a few weeks ago in some pictures that surfaced online, my jaw dropped. Chaka had battled drug abuse in recent years and was a little heavier than she used to be. But girlfriend was looking flawless and super svelte. My jaw dropped. She looked like she had dropped major weight.

And when more pictures were showcased on her Facebook page of her on the red carpet at an event as well as during her performance on the American Idol finale, I instantly looked at my stomach and sucked it in. Chaka, at age 59, is killin’ em! She’s making my 36 year old tail look geriatric.

Chaka, what is your weight loss secret, girl?

With all of these celebrities making major dough with weight loss campaigns (see Mariah with Jenny, Jennifer Hudson with Weight Watchers, and Janet with Nutri System), I’m wondering why someone hasn’t tapped Chaka, who is obviously doing something right.

The last few weeks has been a little un-epic with my weight loss, but seeing Chaka is making me step up my game and get back on the ball.

{Ain’t Chaka FINE? YES!}

I have been working hard watching what I eat and getting more active so I can be physically fit. I have lost a little bit of weight so far, but it’s also been hard maintaining a healthy lifestyle when I travel so much. Luckily, there’s FLOTUS Michelle Obama, who looks so amazing—every time I see her, I am reminded just how fly I can be if I practiced good eating habits and worked out on a regular basis.

Recently, Michelle O shared her workout playlist with Women’s Health magazine. This playlist gets Michelle inspired while working out. I must admit, as a music junkie, I am quite impressed with her playlist. Check out the tunes for yourself:

1. Stevie Wonder: Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)

2. Beyonce: Move Your Body (Let’s Move Theme)

3. Jonelle Monae: Tightrope

4. Sara Bareilles: Love Song

5. Michael Jackson: Unbreakable

6. Willow Smith: Whip My Hair

7. Beyonce: I Was Here

8. Chubb Rock: Treat ‘Em Right

9. Ledisi: Thank You

10. Jennifer Lopez: Get Right

As you can see, Michelle Obama’s musical tastes are diverse! I love the way she blends pop, soul, R&B, hip hop, and old school.

In honor of National Women’s Health Week, Michelle also wrote an article for Women’s Health magazine called ‘Taking Control of Our Health’. She discusses how she became more concerned about her health after a chat with her family pediatrician when her girls were younger. The discussion made her realize that there were some changes that needed to be made as it related to the foods that they were eating. It was from then on that Michelle made it a point to make health a priority in their lives, so they began eating out less, watching their portions, and being more active.

That’s what being fit meant to me: feeling good inside and out, and taking control of my health.

You can read the full article HERE.

Kudos to the First Lady for making being healthy the IN thing to do. She is a great example for all of us to follow!

Doesn’t seeing Michelle’s devotion to health and fitness make you want to be fit and fly and fab too?

Ugh. The last week hasn’t been a good one for me in my plight for #FitFlyFab. As you may know, I am on a quest to lose about 30-45 lbs, and I was doing quite nicely—working out regularly, keeping my calories under my intake goal, and simply, living a healthier lifestyle. But last week came into existence, and I got off track. I missed working out on both of my workout days due to having to tape a show for a local channel here at my house (more on that later) and playing chauffeur for my dad who had a doctor’s appointment. And add to that, traveling to Key Biscayne, Miami for Mom 2.0 Summit and I didn’t watch what I ate. I almost gave up.

But knowing that I came so far made me want to stay on course. And so now, I am back on my workout plan and eating regimen. With 15 pounds lost, I have come far, but I still have a long way to go. And I can’t give up because there are a few roadblocks in the way.

I am doing this because I want to be a healthier person. I want to be around for my children and for my children’s children. I want to make healthier decisions and be someone that both of my kids can look up to. So if I give up, what does that say about me? About my willpower? About my dedication?

{I’m not a quitter!}

I also know I am not the only one who goes through the peaks and valleys of dieting. This isn’t just a diet, but a total lifestyle change. And the only way that we will keep the weight off is by seeing it through. For now, for next, for always.

Here are 8 Reasons Why You (We) Should Stay On Your (Our) Diet:

We’ve come so far to go back now. We’ve made progress. And yes it’s been tough. But the feeling we get when we go down a dress size is reason to keep going.

We are getting healthier, stronger. We are moving and being active, which is good for our bodies.

Because we’ve tried to do this before and we never were able to keep the weight off for a long period of time. This time, let’s do it the right way so we can make a permanent change.

Because we are worth it. Period.

We are having fun finding out what we can do. Zumba, bootcamp, belly dancing. Losing weight and keeping it off can be fun.

Because we have an accountability partners who are also trying to lose weight. If we give up, then what does that mean for them? Aren’t we in this together?

Simply put, we don’t like being overweight. We don’t like not being at our best.

Because we can be saving our lives.

Whenever you want to stop. Or give up. Or not try. Please refer to this blog post to remind yourself why you need to keep doing this. Our bodies will thank us later.

As you may have read in previous blog entries the last month, I am currently in the midst of losing weight and getting in shape. For me, it was not so much as wanting to look good on the outside but I wanted to feel good on the inside. Constantly traveling and eating on the run while selecting poor food choices began to wreck havoc with my health. I gained weight and my vitals (blood sugar and cholesterol) were both higher than they should be. So I started working out and tracking my calories. I also began making healthier food decisions, and so far, I’ve lost 15 pounds.

The wonderful people at the Midwest Dairy Council want to help us get healthy and fit—from the inside out. Milk is a great way to get in the fit of things. It builds strong bones and nourishes the body. And did you know that milk is a great way to refuel after a workout? Who knew?

Here are some other great, healthy and fit facts about milk:

· Fuel for an Active Lifestyle — Milk’s nine essential nutrients play an important role in fueling an active lifestyle. Drinking milk can be an ideal way to help the body refuel, rehydrate and recover after a workout.
· Chocolate Milk Is Nature’s Sports Drink — Research published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism on young adults showed that chocolate milk is twice as effective as commercial sports drinks to refuel exhausted muscles. Part of this is due to its ideal carbohydrate to protein ratio.
· Whey Protein Packs Energy — Whey protein is a high-quality protein found naturally in dairy foods, and it provides the protein your body can best use to help promote better health. It helps you get the most out of your workout by speeding muscle recovery after exercise and helping build and maintain lean muscle. If you are always on the go like me, try this protein-packed Peanut Butter and Banana Breakfast Shake.

The Midwest Dairy Council wants to encourage us all to get fit the healthy way, so they are giving my readers the opportunity to win a Get Moo-ving Pack. The gift pack is worth $100 in value and includes the following:

You may or may not have read that I recently decided that I had to lose weight. The choice wasn’t totally up to me, as I have been saying I was going to lose weight for the past year now and never managed to. During my annual doctor visit, I was told that my blood sugar and cholesterol levels were a little high and if I didn’t manage it, could cause major health problems. She informed me that if I lost about 10-15 lbs, those elevated numbers would go down.

That was all I needed to hear.

I quickly went on a weight loss mission. And not one that was a “temporary fix” but something that I could do for the rest of my life as a lifestyle change. It’s been 3 weeks since I began my weight loss journey and I have lost a total of 10 pounds—-which is a lot in a short period of time, but I have been doing it without starving myself. So I thought I would share with you my 5 Fab Tips to Help You Lose Weight.

Tip #1: Get Moving

Losing weight is hard. Your body’s instincts are to hold on to your weight, not let go of it. So for many of us, actually losing 1 pound takes a lot of work. Just watching what you eat isn’t going to be enough. Eventually, your body will plateau and resist losing weight. You have to get active. That means, moving around, increasing your heart rate and getting your body in motion. You can start with just 10 to 20 minutes a day and work yourself up to a full hour. I like to have fun exercising, so I like to dance. Zumba comes in handy, because I am not only moving around and increasing my heart rate and burning calories, but I am also having fun. Zumba is something that I look forward to doing, not the other way around. So find something fun that you like to do (and keeps you moving) and do it!

Tip #2: Monitor Your Food Intake

Writing down or keeping track of all of the foods and drinks you take in on a daily basis is an eye opener. When you are writing down these calories, you actually see what you are putting in your body. I am on a 1200 calories a day diet and in order to stay within this range, I put everything in my phone. After awhile, you get a sense of what calories are in what and it gets easier.

Tip #3: Read Labels

I am a major label reader now. Nothing goes into my cart at the grocery store anymore that I don’t read the label for. Knowing how many calories and servings are in the food I eat lets me know what I can and cannot eat. And you would be surprised at what foods you think are good for you that are really not. Everything about the foods you buy in the store can be found on the label, and it will make you more aware of what you are putting in your body.

Tip #4: Don’t Stress Over Weighing Yourself

I am a person that likes to go on how my clothes feel as a measure of my weight loss. If I see that my pants are looser and my shirts are bigger, I know that I am losing weight. I have tried to lose weight before and I was so into what the scale said—and when I didn’t lose anything for a week or 2, I would get discouraged. So I don’t get too hung up in weighing myself. I weighed myself at the beginning of my weight loss journey and for the first time a few days ago after two and a half weeks of changing my lifestyle. I probably won’t weigh myself again until 2 more weeks have passed. Seeing that my clothes are fitting better mean more to me than seeing the numbers on the scale.

Tip #5: Support is Essential

Having people in your corner who support your weight loss efforts is important. My entire family has rallied behind me and my weight loss, so they do not pressure me to eat things that I shouldn’t be eating. I also have a few friends who also have my back and cheer me on when they see I have checked in on Foursquare to the place where I workout at. It’s that support that helps me stay in the game.

Tip #6: Allow Yourself A Cheat Day

I have one cheat day every week, usually on a Friday. And it’s on this day that I eat one meal that I really want. It doesn’t mean that I eat junk all day and act like a pig. I just eat something that I normally wouldn’t eat that may be above my calorie limit for the day. I think you have to allow yourself to do that because then, you have something to look forward to, and you won’t be triggered to gorge yourself on a daily basis. That one meal once a week gives me comfort. And then the very next day, I am back on it!

I am by no means an expert, but I did want to share what has been working for me so far. I will check in with you in a few weeks and update you on my progress.

What are your weight loss tips you’d like to share?

P.S. I didn’t even take a before picture so I could monitor my progress. BOO! But I will post some after pics in a few weeks once I’ve slimmed down a little more

Two weeks ago, I went to my doctor to have my annual physical and well-woman visit. Everything checked out well—my blood pressure was perfect, my pap smear was normal, and my doctor didn’t have any concerns about most of my vitals. But something that did raise a flag was my cholesterol level. After going in to have a fasting blood sugar and cholesterol level check, my cholesterol was higher than it has ever been. Not high enough for medication, but she was concerned that if I didn’t get it in check, it would become an issue. And my blood sugar was higher than it used to be too, something that I really have to watch because of my father’s history with diabetes. I recently quit drinking soda and lost a few pounds, but my doctor said that if I lost about 10-15 more pounds, both my cholesterol and blood sugar numbers would go down. Weight loss would be the best thing for my overall health.

So, it’s official guys. Mama needs to lose some weight.

I’ve known this for some time, actually. Three years ago, I was in tip-top shape and I felt the best I’d ever felt physically. I was working out, eating healthy, and staying active. But since I have begun working at home and traveling more, my eating habits haven’t been the best. Working out hasn’t been a top priority, and even though I stopped drinking soda, I haven’t changed my diet. I do a lot of eating out and a lot of snacking, which are no-no’s, and the 15-20 pounds I’ve gained is not a good look.

I want to be healthy. Not just for me look wise and aesthetically, but health wise. It would be selfish of me to eat myself into diabetes and massive overweightness, because it could mean that I wouldn’t be here for my family. We can pretend all we want that weight isn’t an issue, but it is. The heavier we are and the less healthy we are, the more likely that we will have issues that can affect our lifespan.

So I am going to take this negative and make it a positive.

I am on a quest to lose at least 25 lbs. No excuses. I will be working out 3 to 4 days a week and following a new lifestyle eating plan that counts calorie intake. I know the older you are, the harder it is to lose weight, so I know I am going to have to work hard at this to take the weight off and keep it off.

Yesterday, I visited Fit Chix Fitness Studio here in St. Louis and signed up for classes. They offer everything from Boot Camp style workouts, to pole dancing classes, to Zumba, to hip-hop dance, hula hoop exercise and more. If I am going to work out, I want it to be both fun and challenging, and they really seem to be able to put fab and fun in working out.

Anyone who knows me knows that when I do things, I really go all out, so I am looking forward to the instructors challenging me and pushing me to get to my weight loss goal.

The scale doesn’t lie. I am about to tell these 25 lbs to take that!

Okay, so let me preface this post by stating that I have tried on 2 previous attempts to stop drinking soda completely. The first time I did so in 2009, I stopped drinking soda cold turkey for about three months successfully, before falling of the wagon. I followed it up in 2010 by stopping my soda intake for a record 103 days—-only to give in to drinking a can of Coke. It’s something that I am not proud of. My soda addiction is not healthy and has caused me to ingest many wasted calories. Last month, without really trying, I stopped drinking soda, and have been successfully soda free for a little over a month now.

Of course it’s still way too early for me to start feeling that I have triumphed over soda. I have been able to kick my soda addiction in the past, but it was short lived. Now, I am living day-to-day, patting myself on the back for every day that I managed not to drink a Coke or another type of soda. For me, this is monumental.

I was a heavy Coke drinker, drinking about 2-5 cans per day of Coke. I come from a long line of soda drinkers, the first being my father and his mother, my grandmother. I was told that she drank at least a liter of Pepsi every day of her adult life. It’s in me blood!

I have never liked diet soda, and don’t consider that an option.

Why do I want to cut out soda? Well, first off, it’s not setting a good example for my two kids. I want them to lead long and healthy lives, and soda is not healthy at all. How can I want them to be healthy when I am not doing so—I must lead by example. Secondly, all of those wasted calories drinking a beverage just floors me. I want to shed a few pounds, so cutting soda out is mandatory. The calories and the sugar aren’t good for weight loss.

It’s been hard, especially when I am around those who are drinking soda, but I have been hanging in there. I have found creative ways to feel sustained without drinking soda, and I have also learned to appreciate water.

Here’s what I do:

Dress up my water: When I drink water (which is most of the time), I tend to “dress it up”. I add mint, or a lemon or two, or even cucumbers like they do at the spa. It gives it a “taste” and makes it enjoyable for me.

Juice it up: I have also been drinking more juices, but they are so sweet, I usually water them down with H20. I will do a half cup of juice, half cup of water, and then use crushed ice so it’s more like a slushy. It makes me feel full too.

Support please: Everyone who spends time with me knows that I am in the no-soda zone, so they encourage me, and make me comfortable when we are out and I ask for water or tea.

Chew gum: Chewing sugar free gum has cured my cravings (for now) for soda. I don’t even think about soda like I used to.

Dropping soda completely is hard! I experienced massive headaches and was basically “withdrawing” from caffeine the first several days of not drinking it. Most people urge you to ween slowly away from soda, but the cold turkey thing worked for me. I am an all-or-nothing type of girl.

What are your thoughts on the No Soda Challenge? Will you be joining me? Are you addicted to soda like I was? I need answers!

During the past few weeks, we have been introduced to new weight loss commercials from our favorite singing divas; Jennifer Hudson for Weight Watchers, Janet Jackson for Nutra System, and Mariah Carey for Jenny. With the beginning of the New Year, companies such as these like to capitalize on people who want to lose weight and get in shape. Utilizing amazing and fab women like Jennifer, Janet, and Mariah make for great sales—and since they have all battled their weight over the years, serve as people we can identify with.

But is it a little much?

A few weeks ago, I posted the Weight Watchers commercial with Jennifer Hudson singing to her “former” self. Most people who read the post either commented on the post itself or on Twitter and Facebook that they didn’t like the commercial, or the message it sent. Some mentioned that there was nothing wrong with Jennifer before, and that the commercial was odd and not very well put together.

Enter Mariah and Janet who have also stepped on the weight loss train with their commercials. Mariah’s Jenny commercial is a upbeat montage of other fellow Jenny weight losers and Janet’s is a 30 second speech about how she has battled weight gain, and has made headway with Nutri System. Out of all three of the commercials, I think Janet’s wins the battle—she looks amazing and is very believable.

Truth be told, even if we were to use Weight Watchers, Jenny, or Nutri System, Jennifer, Mariah, and Janet have personal trainers, personal chefs, and other people to help them. Us “regular” folks don’t have that advantage.

So what do you think about the new weight loss commercials from Jennifer, Janet, and Mariah? Do they make you want to run out and try their products? Or is it overkill?

Written by Kid Noble, Tech Dude, The Cubicle Chick.com Contributor

If you’re like most Cubicle Chicks and Cubicle Guys, you’ve done plenty of eating during this holiday season (I know I have). One of the top New Year’s resolutions year in and year out is to lose weight/get in shape. Luckily for Android phone and tablet users, there are several apps in the Android market to assist with eating right and getting healthy.

Below are a few of the apps I would recommend for those trying to shed those holiday pounds, get in shape, and live a healthy lifestyle. I’ve personally downloaded these on my Motorola Xoom tablet, and plan on putting them to good use in 2012!

Noom Weight Loss Coach

With over 16,000 downloads, Noom Weight Loss Coach (Noom Inc.) is one of the most popular weight loss apps on the Android market. Noom touts itself as being a digital coach in your pocket (or purse) that advises you daily what you can do to shed pounds. It tracks your progress, grades you, and also adjusts itself to your personal progress. This definitely gives this app a more personal touch. Noom also offers daily encouraging messages, a daily score based on your progress, reminders, and a user support forum.

Noom takes advantage of the ability to add widgets to your phone or tablets home screen as well. In addition, Noom keeps a daily log of your activities; what you’ve eaten, what exact work outs you’ve done and for what length of time, and how many calories you’ve burned. What I like best about this app is the amount of information it can hold about your progress, whether you’re working out on the go or at home. I have downloaded this one on both my HTC Evo 3D as well as my Xoom!

Calorie Counter by FatSecret

With over 40,000 downloads in the Android market, Calorie Counter (FatSecret) is by far the most popular calorie counting app for Android users. Calorie Counter simply lets the user know how many calories are found in the foods they are choosing to eat. It has a food diary to help plan and keep track of what you’re eating, and can also utilize your phone or tablet’s camera to scan barcodes on your favorite food products. This helps to provide you with the nutritional facts as well as your calorie intake.

One of the other benefits of Calorie Counter is that you can sync your account online. This allows users to access and track your information from a laptop or desktop computer, in addition to your mobile android devices. This definitely comes in handy while doing such things as snacking at work, where sometimes use of your mobile devices is prohibited.

Google Music

Last, but certainly not least is Google Music (Google, Inc.). Although this isn’t a health/fitness app, what is a workout without some great music to keep you motivated? Google Music has over 32,000 downloads in the Android market, and is Google’s go to application for downloading and playing music. Think of it as Google’s alternative to iTunes.

Like I said previously, Google Music allows you to download the latest tunes to your computer, or directly to your phone. Just like the other Google mobile apps (Maps, Calendar, Gmail, etc.) everything you do within the app syncs to the desktop, and vice versa. Create a play list on your laptop, it appears on your phone within moments. Download a song from the Android market on your phone, it also appears in the desktop application. Whether you work out to “Countdown” by Beyonce, “Blow” by Ke$ha, “I’m Flexin’” by T.I., or “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO, it can all be found on Google Music.

Hopefully these three Android apps will assist you in getting those holiday pounds off! Download the apps, create a play list, head to the gym, and start burning those calories!
