I have a love/hate relationship with the social network Facebook, and apparently so do others. Because of Facebook’s ever changing privacy policy and handling of personal information, many users are fed up with the number one social networking site. A group has been formed for those to quit Facebook on May 31st, and there is even a website issuing information to interested participants. The website boasts that over 1700 people have committed to quitting Facebook via their cause.
Another group, Facebook Protest, is challenging Facebook to change their current privacy policies, or is asking for a complete boycott of Facebook on June 6th. They even a Twitter handle called @FacebookProtest in which you can follow and they will keep up-to-date about the anti-Facebook movement.
According to Facebook Protest, they want you to do the following:
‘Commit to not logging in or interacting with Facebook in any way. Be sure to log out of Facebook in all of your browsers no later than the evening of June 5th. On the 6th, be sure to not use Facebook connect or click any “Like” buttons: basically refrain from ALL Facebook related activity.’
I am not a fan of Facebook at all and I much prefer Twitter as my top social network as I have blogged many times, but I also understand that as the top social networking site, it’s a necessary evil. Their privacy policy has been a topic of conversation for months now, but in the grand scheme of things, is it bad enough for us to stop using it completely? How does their privacy policy compare to those of Twitter, Myspace, Yahoo, Google, etc.?
What are your thoughts about Quit Facebook Day. Will you be turning off Facebook forever?
