Has Jennifer Hudson Lost Too Much Weight?

I have been a fan of Jennifer Hudson since she first was on television during American Idol. When it was announced that she was going to play Effie White in Dreamgirls, I was elated. She was the perfect woman to play such a pivotal and bold role and the accolades and awards she received because of it was well earned. There is not much Jennifer could do wrong in my eyes, but I am starting to wonder if she’s lost too much weight.

Jennifer has always been beautiful to me, big or small. As a size 12 woman myself, I could stand to lose a few pounds. But I don’t want to lose my curves or vivaciousness—Jennifer had curves for days and was a beauty despite he bigger frame. When she first lost weight early last year on Weight Watchers, I applauded her. She looked fabulous! But as I look at her again during her latest round of Weight Watcher commercials, something seems amiss. Even after having a baby, Jennifer looked fabulous. She was no Twiggy, but I didn’t think she needed to be.

We all know how our society is, especially in the entertainment industry. Big girls get love with their talent and voices but aren’t really known as sex symbols. Not saying that Jennifer lost weight to be a sex symbol, but I am sure the people in her corner has urged her to slim down. Jennifer has lost so much weight that she looks like, in my opinion, to a shadow of her former self. Her face is sunken in and she doesn’t look as vibrant as she used to. It is rumored that she is down to a size 2.

I am not a hater because I LOVE J-Hud, but I think she looked more beautiful with a little more meat on her bones.

What do you guys think? Has Jennifer Hudson lost to much weight? Or is she finally the Hollywood standard that she needs to be in order to compete for roles? What’s say you?

Here is a picture of Jennifer Hudson in Feb. 2010:

I’m no diet expert but in my opinion Jennifer Husdon has lost way too much weight. She needs to let that long weave go and go back to a chin length bob to alleviate the bobblehead look she currently has. She’s too thin for her frame. I’m concerned about her weight loss as it relates to her personal life with David Otunga. Something about him doesn’t sit well with me. I hope she is losing weight in a healthy manner. Everyone isn’t meant to be a size 4…

Kim, funny you mentioned bobblehead. That has been a running theme on Twitter since I posted this article. Her head does now seem bigger than her body.

This is a tough one, b/c I really like her personality so much. I know it must have been incredibly difficult for her to lose the weight with the whole world watching, but I think she looks less “real” now. Had I now known what she looked like before, maybe I would probably think she looks great but the features on her face are so much sharper now that I don’t they match her personality or her voice.

What’s really funny to me is that I think Queen Latifah is one most vibrantly beautiful women on the planet, and to me that she is so comfortable with herself is part of what makes her so attractive.

Terry- It is tough. I love Jennifer! She is one of my favorite actresses and singers. When she first lost weight last year I thought she looked perfect. But now what made her beautiful (her curves) are gone. I am all for people being healthy but I hope she doesn’t lose any more.

She STILL has curves and IMO, she looks good. She doesn’t need to go any smaller, though. I haven’t heard any rumors of her being a size 2; I’ve heard she’s a 6 now. That’s not unreasonable! I think the bobble head effect is due more to the hair styles she’s been wearing…

I love Jennifer Hudson, it is no secret that I do but she has lost too much weight. I previously blogged about the same thing except I asked have her losing all that weight contributed to a vocal decline as well.

Jennifer was a beautiful and sexy normal size girl at one point in time. She was curvy and had that booming voice. Now she’s this skinny lil’ girl that seems to have trouble controlling that still powerful voice.

I’m glad she’s happy though because she does seem to be more comfortable on stage. I guess it’s hard to perform and let loose when you think everyone is looking at your jelly rolls. Well with a voice like Jennifer’s they can’t pay attention to nothing but that awesome voice. I hope she gains a little weight though.

I love JHud and I think she looks great! I’m not going to give my opinion as to if she’s lost too much weight b/c I have been there. When you are a girl who goes from being rather large to noticeably smaller (lost 20+ lbs), suddenly everyone feels the need to tell you ‘you look great, you don’t need to lose anymore weight’. Several years ago, I used to weigh nearly 200lbs and slimmed all the way down to 145, kept if off a few years and now I am 160. As someone who has been there, it’s my decision how much weight I want to lose/keep. Maybe she just wants a change for herself, afterall she’s been large just about all her life. She deserves to see a smaller version of herself, without it having to be about hte industry standards of Hollywood’. I say congrats! Oh and she has inspired me to join WW and lose another 20-30lbs for 2011!!

IMO no one knew if she had any health conditions w/ the weight or what they were… & none of us know how much weight she REALLY lost in what timeframe… we only see what the media allows us to see (& often times that is lighting & airbrushed photos). I’m not her doctor, so I can’t say.

I never trust commercial ad photography. There is always some sort of photo editing liposuction going on. She once had a cute round m&m shaped face, but now it’s an oblong almond. 🙁 I hope she doesn’t waste away to nothingness.

I agree with Emily. Wow..there are truly some haters on this site. In my opinion, I think Jennifer looks fabulous. She looked great with or without the weight. J Hud looks good and healthy and she is not a size 2. She said on Oprah that she is a size 6 and cant see herself being any smaller. The very women that are not pleased with J Hud new weight are probably overweight and out of shape themselves. There is nothing wrong with being healthy and fit!

Jennifer has lost too much weight. If you have never been a size 6 in your entire life, how can you maintain it? Jennifer has never been a size 6 because it’s not in her genetic make up, so you’re going to force your body to be something it is not! Jennifer’s body is not proportioned, her head is and face is elongated and she now has these deep smile line around in her labial folds due to an extreme amount of fat lost in her face. she really needs to re-evaluate herself because SKINNY/THIN is not the defination of healthy!

My opinion is yes. We all have a certain size we are supposed to be. We can make our bodies do just about anything, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for us. She doesn’t look balanced. Her head is literally appearing too big for her body now. I don’t want her to be unhealthy, and skinny doesn’t equate to good health. I hated being so thin my whole life, then after 30 and finally gaining some weight it was in all the wrong places, and was lumpy cellulite. I will never be “thick” and trying to has an adverse effect. Most people are stuck on the weight charts that are pushed on us at the doctors offices that say for this height you should weigh this much. The problem is that most black woman don’t understand that those charts are based on western medicine. Africans naturally have more muscle in our bodies than most other ethnic groups, and muscle weighs more than fat, so we are actually being fed an unrealistic body image. That being said… Black women DO need to work out, and be aware of what we put in our bodies. Most peoples’ “thick” is code for being overweight

Although I don’t like Jennifer Hudson, I second Tracy’s thought. She looks great, and I’m happy for her for making healthy changes.

She was at an unhealthy size no matter how you put it. And saying medical charts are feeding African American women unrealistic body images that are perpetuated by “Western” medicine is ridiculous. In “Eastern” medicine Americans are gargantuan giants dwarfing the planet’s populations; and on any height/weight chart “healthy” ranges span thirty pounds or so. That leaves plenty of room for various body shapes and sizes for a given height that are all within a healthy range–extra muscle, thickness, butt, breasts, or even fat included. (Muscle doesn’t “weigh more than fat”, btw. Put five pounds of each on a scale and you’ve still got five pounds of each; muscle’s just more dense, taking up less space.)

What’s common becomes average, and average becomes normal. So she’s never been a size 6–does that mean it can’t be normal for her? Maybe she was never given the chance to be. Maybe–especially evident by the friends and family she’s inspired to lose weight too–she’s been surrounded by the commonality of obesity and poor eating habits from birth, spending her entire life making the same choices that the people influencing her made and ended up larger than she would’ve had her environment been different. It’s unfair to assume she’s anorexic because she’s smaller than the average woman (who is usually at least a 12), or because her skin hasn’t quite caught up yet. Don’t forget, she was much, much bigger at her absolute highest (a 22)–it may just take some time.

You just can’t please everyone, I find she looked fabulous….when she was full figured some found she was too big….now she’s slim some find she’s too skinny….You can never please everyone….Jennifer is pleasing herself and that’s all that matters….She looks amazing back then and she looks amazing now…she’s now eating healthier than ever….when you are over weight does not necessarily means that you are healthy….vice versa as well when you are skinny….but what I am saying…she still has her curves and shape….I see nothing wrong in the way she look. I am a thick woman in size and I would love to join Weight Watchers. Instead of us sitting and complaining and making excuses for being big. Try and lose the weight for health purposes. I don’t know who told you all that being over weight is healthy it’s not healthy….so start eating smart and lose the weight..

I think Jennifer looks much better and healthier and is a excellent role model for other young black women. Sometimes it seems like some of them don’t care about their weight or just say ‘the men like it’….which may or may not be true; but it is their health they should be concerned with and what lies ahead in the future.

(personally, I really don’t like her version of the song she sings in the Weight Watchers commercial….JMO!)

I’m always amazed at how FAT girls always hate on someone who loses weight by saying something negative, whether it be that their head is too big, or they’ve lost a sense of realness (’cause we all know, fat makes you more real, right?). I think that Americans really are sick if we think that a normal size for a woman is TOO small. Go around the world and see what normal is, then come back and become the America of 25 years ago. We’ve gotten too fat too quickly and are rearing young women with the idea that small is the new FAT—in other words, being small, simply by eating well and exercising is wrong.

Back the heck away from the table and computer and go do a few laps. Kudos, Ms Hudson!
