I am not proud of being hooked on the soap opera ‘All My Children’ but at least I own up to it. I have been watching the daytime drama religiously since the fall of 2008, and I must admit I am completely involved in the storyline. Which is why today’s news of a possible cancellation of the soap is breaking my heart—is this the end of Pine Valley as we know it?
According to MSN, the 41 year old soap opera may be yanked off the air due to ABC reducing its daytime drama arsenal. Because of a recent plunge in the ratings, the powers that be feel that it may be time for ‘All My Children’ to be given the boot.
Erica Kane cannot be happy about this.
‘All My Children’ wouldn’t be the first soap opera to fall victim to budget cuts and low ratings. Earlier this year, CBS got rid of its longest running soap opera’ As the World Turns’, and also said goodbye to ‘Guiding Light’ in 2009. NBC also had to shave daytime soap ‘Passions’ from its lineup in 2007.
It’s clear that daytime dramas are no longer the rage—the young and hip are into court programs and talk shows and the soap opera has become a relic of old.
I would hate to see ‘All My Children’ fall by the wayside—Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci) is the most loved bitch on daytime television, and the AMC cast is probably the best set of actors in the game, hands down. With amazing characters Jessie (Darnell Williams) , Angie (Debbi Morgan), Greenlee (Rebecca Budig), and Cameron Matheson (Ryan), you will be hard pressed to find a group that works so well together.
I guess we will have to stay tuned to see if ‘All My Children’ survives. I am hoping that ABC decided to give the show one more shot—I’m not ready to say goodbye just yet.
What are your thoughts? Do you watch ‘All My Children’ or other soap operas?
