February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Summer Shoe Guide: Season’s Hottest Shoes

When it comes to shoes, summer may be the best season of the year because you have so many cool options and trends to choose from! From gladiators, to strappy heels, to bright flats and wedges, this season’s shoes will have you looking fab while at work, when on vacation or for any other occasion.

Check out our Summer Shoe Guide. The Season’s Hottest Shoes!:

1. Colorful strappy flats are perfect for adding a pop of color to an otherwise neutral outfit.  The gold hardware also helps add a little jazz to the most casual of outfits.

2.  Wedges are a great way to add a few extra inches to your height, yet they provide your feet with a little more comfort and support than normal heels.  A neutral pair will go with everything in your closet, but it’s also fun to try a trendier pair, like a floral print, or color block wedge. You can rock a wedge with any outfit, but they are paired best with a cute, summer dress.

3.   The strappy heel has got to be the dressiest, most sexy shoe of the summer. They are definitely the go-to shoe for any special occasion.  Throw a pair on with any outfit to add a touch of instant glam, and a little more sass to your step!

4.  And the last shoe that is a definite must-have for the summer is… The Gladiator! It is a very structured sandal, which may come across as a little intimidating at times, but when the shoe is worn with the right piece, a statement is instantly made. This season, we’re seeing the gladiator climb higher and higher up the leg to “knee-high” status. Feeling especially bold? Go Grecian and try out the knee-length gladiator sandal!

I hope you enjoyed our Summer Shoe Guide for the 2013 Summer Season. Make sure to have fab fun in the sun, while showing off your shoes!
