February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

AVON Power Couple: Successful in Love and Business

Birthday cake with candles on the table isolated pink

I have gone on record in the past stating that sometimes, it is not very smart to go into business with a friend or family member. Relationships can weather many things, but being in business together can bring more stress into the equation. But there are those who defy the odds and are able to launch a business together successfully and without the drama. Being as how it is February and the Month of Love due to Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share with you the story of Gary and Lynette, a true AVON Power Couple who have created a successful business together.

This story is more than AVON—both Gary and Lynette left their full-time jobs to go into business for themselves, and created a lifestyle for their family on their own terms.

Here is their story:

So you guys are truly a Power Couple that works together. How did you guys get your start with AVON?

Gary initially started network marketing back in 1997 and I later joined him when we met in 1999. We achieved small successes while working in our first network marketing company but the best thing we did while working in that company was we became great students learning everything that we could from our mentors. I initially got started in 2008 and Gary wasn’t really into Avon because he was in another company at the time. Because of our previous experience in network marketing, I (Lynette) was having little to no trouble at all bringing new Representatives onto our team. Gary would always wonder how come I was recruiting at such a fast rate compared to him in his company. He soon realized that the reasoning was because Avon was so well-branded compared to his company. He would have to explain what the company was and what the benefits were. Joining forces together in Avon was a no brainer so we began working together after we moved from New York City to Texas in 2011.

Avn_Brnd_ambssdr_badgeWhen did you know it was time to leave your full-time jobs behind to work together full-time on your AVON business?

After the first 2 years of being with Avon we knew that I (Lynette) first needed to leave my full-time job because at the time I worked in a call center and my time was very limited. I was unable to do simple things that a normal person who may be working a 9-5 job would have been able to do. I left in 2010 and have not looked back since Gary kept his job. In 2011 we decided to make the move from New York to Texas which was the best move we have ever made. Gary was initially working when we first moved to Texas but after just 4 months of working and our Avon business continuing to grow, he also decided to leave his full-time job so we could work Avon together. Four months after he left his full-time job we actually moved all the way up to the highest level in the company and I do believe it was because we both began working together focused on meeting the same goal which helped us move so fast.

Social media plays a huge part in your success. Why do you feel it’s important for your business?

We’ve been using social media for our network marketing businesses ever since 2000 when we first joined MySpace and yes, it’s definitely helped play a vital role in how we conduct business. When I first joined Avon and had the ability to sign up new Avon Representatives throughout the United States I tried as many ways as I could to reach as many people as I could to get them onto our team. We’ve consistently promoted ourselves online that most people come to us to get started because they found our information somewhere online. Being so active online for our business is very important because it keeps our business growing with new people, which is the lifeblood in this type of business.  We also have a team group page for our team which allows us to stay connected and motivate our teammates who are also using social media. We post tips, incentives and promotions on our page because the majority of our team lives in a different state than we do; it makes it feel like a family by everyone being able to connect with each other online where if it were not for social media they probably would not have been able to do so.

AVON Power Couple Gary & Lynette BledsoeWhat tips would give couples who want to work together?

We believe that compromise is one of the best tips. There were many times in the beginning of my Avon path that I had to spend time away from the house to either attend a meeting or sign someone up that Gary had to care for the children and if we didn’t have a common goal of financial freedom, he would have been very upset to have to watch the kids while I had to do these activities for the business. Another tip is to share the business with your spouse and explain why you are in the business, whether it was initially as a hobby or as in my case, to truly change the destiny of our family.

Are there benefits of working together while selling AVON?

The first benefit I would say to working together while selling Avon is that we both have a common goal and work the business every day to achieve that goal. We also both have an understanding of what needs to be done in the business. Having two people working at the same time makes it that much faster to achieve our goals with Avon. The benefit which I truly love is that we get to spend days together when we have nothing planned for the business and can go out to breakfast or lunch while our children are in school.

What do you guys do together during your spare time?

Most days while our children are in school we spend the day working on ways to improve our business, whether it’s attending an online training or making phone calls to help those that need assistance. The best thing I’d have to say is because we are not on a “work schedule,” most spare time gets spent with our children at the pool, movies, the local park or dining at local restaurants, getting to know our city which we are still trying to site see.

How has AVON changed your lives?

Avon has changed our lives in so many ways that I’m not even sure where to start. First, I can say it has helped us both leave our full-time jobs, move to the city of our choice, and last but not least change the financial destiny for generations to come in our family. Our children and even grandchildren will be left a legacy from something that we started from the very beginning to something greater than we could have ever imagined.

As you can see, Gary and Lynette have found their “secret sauce” while working together as a team. Starting a business can be scary, but when you have a spouse or significant other who is also sharing the dream, it can make it easier. Kudos to this couple who have found a way to make it work professionally as well personally.
