February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Forty-Something: Unleashing a Healthier Me with Curves

Being forty-something means living my best life yet. Read how I am partnering with Curves in order to get fit and fabulous.

This post is sponsored by Curves®.

I turned forty-two a few weeks ago, and I’ve got a few goals I want to accomplish this year. My intentions include getting my book published, redecorate my home from head to toe, and get healthier and more fit. I am off to a really good start with all three, and the latter is coming together with the help of Curves®.

You may have heard of Curves before, but forget what you think you know. Curves is a a woman-focused fitness center that helps us stay active, even with our hectic lifestyles. At the foundation of their program is Curves Circuit; a series of hydraulic strength-training machines that works your whole body in just 30 minutes.

I’ve been looking for a place that I can get a good workout in a no judgement zone. Curves is all about empowering us to love ourselves and our bodies by giving us a encouraging environment to workout in.

During my first visit, I met with a Curves Coach for a consultation. We discussed my fitness goals, the Curves motto, and I got a tutorial of each machine and how to use it correctly. The plan for me is to come to work out three days a week for the next 30-days. I will be getting in heavy cardio, spending 30 seconds at each station.

I was also given a full tour and worked a few of the stretching stations to get the feel of everything.

I felt totally comfortable at my Curves location, and I am looking forward to getting the most out of what they have to offer. There’s even Specialty Classes designed women of all ages that include things like Zumba, which I plan to take in addition to my workouts.

What’s more, Curves is celebrating their 25 year anniversary.

I am ready to shed some pounds and get even more fabulous!

Make sure to follow along my fitness journey on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

I love Curves. Gyms can be so intimidating at times, but not when everyone there is all working towards a fitness goal just like you!

I’ve heard the Curves is a great place to get your workout on if you’re a little self-conscious. I love the idea of a place that welcomes everyone.
