Why Having a Dedicated Workspace as an Entrepreneur is Crucial for Success

There is something about walking into my home office that helps to transform me.

Everywhere else in my home, I am a mom—a juggler of many hats. In the kitchen I’m a chef, in the living room I’m the entertainer, in the bedroom I’m the…(welp).

All of those spaces and then some in my home are stages in which I play a role. But in my home office, I am the CEO, Head Chick in Charge, and that is where the magic happens. It allows me to separate my work from my personal life while giving me an organized space in which to work. I am asked all of the time about how I manage to be able to work on so many different projects at one time and it is because I have a dedicated workspace. It allows me to filter out distractions while completing my work flow.

When you work from home, the lines can easily be blurred. Having a dedicated workspace can help those lines of demarcation be more prominent. It gives you an area in which you can give your professional side some attention that is separate from the other living areas of your home.

My workspace is far from fancy. I converted my oldest son’s room into my office and added a futon for when he visits. I got my desk at TJ Maxx and that is pretty much it. Artwork adorns my walls from my 12 year old daughter and it’s a comfy, no frills area.

I’ve created a lot of things in this space that have added to my income streams and overall profit. It works for me!

If you do not have a dedicated workspace and you are working in the kitchen or dining room or living room, please stop. Even if you don’t have an extra room to set up shop, you can take an area in one of those places and make it a workspace. Use dividers to section off your area use a desk or TV tray even, and you’ve created a makeshift space.

You will find yourself more productive and focused, allowing you to be more consistent with your professional goals.

Since I have a home office, I have traditional hours in place.  It helps me stay on track and on my grind.

And if you are looking for ways to personalize your workspace it to give it a signature, I’ve shared ideas on how to do that HERE.

To recap, let’s list why it’s important to have a dedicated workspace for your success:

  • helps you stay organized
  • keeps you from distractions and aids in consistency
  • teaches and trains family members to respect your work area
  • helps you play your entrepreneur role
  • assists in work life management and separating your personal from your professional

I don’t know what I would do without my dedicated workspace!
