February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

McDonald’s McCafe Free Coffee Event Begins 9/16 Nationwide #SipandTell

Did someone say free coffee? In the spirit of America’s most popular beverage that allows us a cup of ambition before, during, and perhaps even after work, McDonald’s has announced that their McCafe will be giving away free coffee during breakfast hours at participating restaurants across the U.S.

Coffee can be an expensive habit if you buy one before work everyday, so having a free cup will certainly help out your budget.

McDonald’s is celebrating National Coffee Day, which is September 29th. From now (September 16th) to September 29th during their McDonald’s McCafe Free Coffee Event, you can get a free small cup of coffee at a McDonald’s McCafe location. That’s two weeks of free coffee! You can’t beat that.

McCafe Free Coffee

McDonald’s also wants to encourage you to share your “embarrassing pre-coffee moments on social media” by using the #SipandTell hashtag and tweeting @McCafe. Selected sharers will receive custom gifts for sharing their stories. And on National Coffee Day, local McDonald’s restaurants will be giving participants the chance to win free coffee for the entire year (please note, this portion is exclusive to the St. Louis region).

On National Coffee Day, Sept. 29, McDonald’s will host a scavenger hunt throughout the St. Louis area, to have social media followers find McCafé Coffee signs posted around town for a chance to win free McCafé coffee for a year.

Are you a fan of McDonald’s coffee? It will soon be on sale in stores so that you can brew it in your home or office. Here’s more:

McCafé fans in St. Louis and nationwide will soon be able to enjoy their coffee whenever they want, including at home. McDonald’s recently announced a collaboration with Kraft Foods Group, Inc. to offer a variety of McCafé ground, whole bean and single cup coffees in grocery stores and other retailers nationwide starting in early 2015.

And with the holidays coming soon, McDonald’s McCafe will be offering their holiday staple, White Chocolate Mocha, in addition to new flavors White Chocolate Latte and Hot Chocolate for a limited-time.

Yummers. Make sure to stop by and get your free cup of joe!
