Make 2018 the Year You Buy Your First Home

If you think homeownership is impossible for you, don't! You can make 2018 the year you buy your first home. Learn how. Sponsored.

This post is sponsored by Fannie Mae.

Growing up in Arizona in the 80’s, I witnessed my dad purchase our first home. It was a ranch style home with a carport, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a huge kitchen, complete with a swimming pool. This was such a remarkable feat for my father, who was able to buy this home for us when he turned 30. He was so proud of this accomplishment, and I even went to the closing and watched as my parents signed on the dotted line. Even though I was only 10 years old, I knew one day that I, too, wanted to buy a home of my own.

Of course, real life took place. I graduated from high school. Then my son was born. Then college. Then marriage and another child. It seemed as though my family and I would never be able to achieve the ultimate American dream. As much as we planned and saved, something always came up that alluded our pursuits of home ownership. We always rented, and such was life.

But finally, it happened. I was well into my 30’s when I was able to buy my own home, and I was super proud to have something to call my own. And since that time, I have been able to invest in rental properties for added income and to grow my investment portfolio. All of that time, I thought that everything had to be perfect in order for me to buy a home. I thought I had to have perfect credit, a huge amount for a down payment—you know the drill. But in fact, that isn’t the case.

You might be able to buy your first home with as little as 3% down.

If you want to own a home of your very own, it is more achievable than you think!  There are affordable mortgage options available for you. Buying a home should be an experience that isn’t stressful or difficult. It should give you a peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment.

If you have been on the fence about buying your first home, or have been scared to do so, it’s time to take another look. 2018 should be the year that you buy your first home. Make it a goal and go after it. Save. Look after your credit. And then prepare to buy something that can be your very own.
