When it comes to beauty and makeup, there is only one go-to person I listen to—Tia Dantzler. Tia is a professional makeup artist and beauty expert who has beautified some of the world’s biggest celebrities and public figures. At one time, Tia was Jennifer Hudson‘s personal makeup artist, and created her award winning look for Dreamgirls press tours, appearances, and the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Tia has also worked with President Obama on his iconic 2008 GQ cover, music artist Maxwell, reality star and actress, Nene Leakes—the list goes on and on.
Tia Dantzler knows her stuff! Recently, she shared with me a few Spring trends that will be on point next season, as well as some of her beauty trade secrets. She is spilling the tea, and honey, I am here for THIS!

2013 Spring and Summer Trends Q&A with Tia Dantzler
TCC: What are the top 3 makeup/beauty trends this Spring and Summer season?
Tia Dantzler: This Spring and Summer, beautiful glowing skin is in so let your natural beauty shine through. Embrace mineral powders, beauty balms, and tinted moisturizers for a luminous finish. Color blocking will be huge these next two seasons so commit to focusing on one feature and keeping the rest of your look natural. Bold brows are making a comeback this season. So make certain to have your brows shaped and be sure to fill in any sparse hairs with either brow powder or a brow pencil for a perfected, strong brow.
TCC: What 4 items should ever fab girl have in their makeup bag for the Spring and Summer Season?
Tia Dantzler: Every beauty girl should carry MAC Blot Powder in their makeup bags for on the go touch-ups to resolve any melty mishaps. Another must-have is Tatcha Blotting Papers which are best for sopping up excess oil to your skin. Make certain not to rub the blot tissue on your skin just press it into your skin to avoid disturbing your makeup. Also, Almay Oil-Free Makeup Eraser Sticks are prepacked with remover to clean up any smears or smudges to your eyes or lips. I love that they’re compact and prepared to remove mishaps quick and easy. Another staple product to have in your makeup bag is Avene Thermal Water Face Spray. TCC: What’s product(s) do you recommend for moisturizing our skin for the Spring and Summer Season?
Tia Dantzler: I would definitely recommend using a water based moisturizer from warmer months. Look for moisturizers with SPF which not only gives your skin sun protection it also hydrates through out the day.
TCC: What is the biggest mistake most of us make with our makeup in the Spring and Summer months?
Tia Dantzler: One of the biggest mistakes not to make is going into the warmer months without a daily skincare regimen. We should all adapt the “less is more” philosophy for the warmer months. So that means we really play close attention to our skin leading up to the warmer months so we can wear a bare face if we want too.
TCC: This question came from one of my readers—I only have 5 minutes each day to apply makeup. What products will give me a finished appearance without a lot of time?
Tia Dantzler:
The perfect 5 minute face:
- A tinted moisturizer to even out your skin-tone.
- Spot treat troublesome areas with concealer.
- A water-proof mascara in the warmer months to prevent smudging.
- A cream based blush for a hint of color to your cheeks.
- Add the perfect bold lip-color to finish off your look.
TCC: Share with us one of your beauty secrets!
Tia Danztler: For long-lasting lips, take a small makeup brush, dip it in a lip or face primer and trace around the outer edges of your mouth to seal in the color. This prevents your lipstick from bleeding throughout the day.
