February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Take this survey (link in bio) for the chance to win 1 of 5 $100 VISA gift cards—takes less than 10 minutes.

Thanks, @mediqcme, and Duke Heart. Supported by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance.

Kana’s AVON Story: Giving Back is Important to Entrepreneurial Success

AVON Disclosure

Rep Photo - Kana BrownEach month as an AVON Brand Ambassador (click here to read previous profiles), I share stories of AVON Representatives who, not only are success stories in their own right, but impact their communities in ways that bring positive change. AVON is a wonderful way women around the world are tapping into their business savvy, but many of them are also using their talents to give back. This month’s AVON profile features Kana Brown, an esthetician, makeup artist, and AVON Representative who won the AVON Central Regional Makeup Maven Award.

Kana, you are an esthetician by trade. How did you get involved with selling AVON?:

You’ve got to love family, my mom works in an office full of ladies. Whenever I got photos back from photo shoots, or updated my website, she would email every woman in the office.  Eventually,  her Avon lady, who works in the same office, contacted me to do make up for a photo shoot she wanted to do with her team. Shortly after she recruited me to start selling Avon myself.

What are some of the tools you used to grow your AVON business?:

Doing the (training) videos surely helped. The one thing that I could tell helped the most is blogging about my favorite Avon products each month.

Since you are into skincare, what AVON items do you recommend for skin for the Fall and Winter seasons?:

Without a doubt Skinvincable! This skincare line provides moisture and protection from free radicals in the environment.

What are some of your favorite AVON products?:

Everything! It depends on what I’m in the mood for, but I absolutely love the Super Shock Gel Liners, Totally Kissable Lipsticks and the Mega Effects Mascara.

You give back by volunteering with Look Good, Feel Better: How did you get involved with this organization?:

My grandmother and mother both have been plagued with Breast Cancer and my mom has fortunately been in remission for about 3 years now. I was looking for a way to give back or help in any way using what I love to do. During my schooling as an esthetician this program was introduced to us as a way to help cancer patients going through chemotherapy look and feel their best with skincare consultations and makeup sessions.  As soon as I had my license I signed up! (click here to learn more about the Look Good, Feel Better Organization).

202109_658301157529293_294577285_oWhy do you feel its an important for an entrepreneur to give back?:

I am a firm believer of what you put out into the world is what you get back! I can’t expect to grow as a business if I’m not helping my community grow at the same time.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?:

Ever since I’ve been doing make up, the possibilities have grown to an extent that I could have never imagined. So in 10 years, all I can see myself doing is whatever at that time makes me happy.

How has AVON changed your life?:

Avon has pushed me far beyond the limits of what I thought I could do. The national Makeup Maven contest has made me realize that all I need to do is put forth my best and the world will give it’s best back in return!
