February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Girls Night Out Stayaway: Our Moonrise Hotel Winter Adventure

What would I do without my girls? Luckily, I don’t have to find out, because they always have my back. I’ve blogged before (here) about my beloved Sistatribe crew—we are six ladies deep, acting as friends, confidantes, colleagues, business partners, adversaries, the list goes on and on. We are split up in terms of location. Three of us live in the St. Louis area, two live in the Atlanta area, and one lives in Memphis. So we try to get together as much as we can, and we’ve even planned weekend getaways, including one near the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee that took place last March. Recently, us St. Louis Sistatribe members (Kesha from UncommonChick.com and Ini from Glamazini.com–see their blog buttons in my footer) got together for an overnight stay at the boutique Moonrise Hotel located in the Delmar Loop area, known for its trendy set and Walk of Fame sidewalks. We were afforded the Mary Wickes suite, names after St. Louis born actress who starred in such films as By The Light of the Silvery Moon with Doris Day and Sister Act.

After having dinner at my favorite restaurant, Ruth’s Chris in Clayton, we retreated to our suite to have a little fun in our onesies. I must say, the Sistatribe is a unique group. We enjoy having fun in a unique way, and we can count one another to keep the laughs and the giggles coming forth for hours.

Sistatribe Moonrise Hotel

We stayed up past 3am discussing everything from marriage, to friendships, to social media, to future trips we want to take together. As an only child, I don’t know what it feels like to have a sister—but with these three ladies and the rest of our Sistatribe crew, I really feel a sisterhood unlike none other.

It’s by chance that we all met via the Internet, and got introduced to one another through meeting at various conferences and events. We all blog and have our own media conglomerates so to speak—and we try to help one another with ideas, or just by giving a shoulder to lean on. Not sure I would be where I currently am had it not been for these girls.

Every once in awhile, you need to get away and have a bonding moment with your crew (and you don’t need a reason). I love it when we can revert back to our slumber party days and have an overnight stayaway—you are never too old to do so!

To my Sistatribe, I say thank you for being you. And thank you for letting me be me. Warts and all.

Oh, and about our suite at the Moonrise Hotel? Loved the room, which was equipped with an eating area, bar, bedroom, living room area, and nice sized bathroom, with hallway entry into the suite. Having a suite dedicated to a St. Louisan was a nice touch, and I can say I would definitely recommend it to others. (The Moonrise Hotel currently has 10 Walk of Fame suites, each named after a famous St. Louisan).
