February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Summer Stayaway: The Moonrise Hotel In St. Louis’s The Loop

As I previously blogged, I love stayaways. When you cannot afford to get away or don’t have the time, a stayaway is a great alternative to have a mini-vacay in your own backyard. It’s a great way to reconnect romantically with a loved one or getaway without “getting away”.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of staying at the new hip and trendy boutique hotel in St. Louis’s Delmar Loop area called ‘The Moonrise Hotel’. It is the first hotel on the Loop and was built last year. Hailed as a unique and interesting place to stay, I found myself looking forward to staying at the haute spot, which has every amenity you can think of.

I stayed in a “King” room and it was a nice size. But what’s more was the bathroom was a treasure to behold. The bathroom was a great size with wonderful lighting, something I love because good lighting is essential to putting on make-up well. Most hotels I have had the pleasure of staying in had poor lighting and are small as heck. At the Moonrise, I was impressed with the space in the bathroom.

The room itself was nice—great King sized bed which slept amazingly. The view wasn’t too fab, but those of you who know that area of the Loop know there isn’t much to see unless you are on top of the hotel in the Moonrise Rooftop Bar.

What most impressed me about the hotel was the lobby. It is very art deco with a modern twist, and features a staircase that lights up. The furnishings and fixings in the lobby are very fabulous and the staff made us feel at home!

The Moonrise Hotel is also pet friendly. Another great thing if you are traveling with pets.

The Moonrise also features a Business Center that is open twenty four hours a day with free printing. There is also free wifi in each room and there is the Eclipse Restaurant in the lobby area which I am told serves the best sloppy joes known to man.

Our stay was a lovely one. The only drawback was on our floor, there was a “unique” smell. As if something was spilled on the carpet and was left to dry.

There was also a family reunion clan that took over the Business Center when I was using it (at midnight mind you) with kids and babies who were not controlled. This was not the Moonrise’s fault, however, I could not enjoy the Business Center because Shaniqua and crew (and yes her name as Shaniqua, no joke!) and her children were running amok in the area.

It is family reunion season ya know….

I would recommend The Moonrise Hotel to anyone who wants to have a stay at a fun atmosphere that is trendy and inviting. I will be back to visit the Moonrise in the future.

Very nice. I've gone for drinks at their rooftop bar and in the lounge area. They have awesome martinis!!! I love "stayaways" (perfect term, i'm gonna hafta use that…LOL). While Viewing your photos I thought of in South Beach, Miami or something along the lines of the Millenium Hotel in NY. Modern, trendy, nice!!!!

Yes, the art deco look was prevalent at the Moonrise Hotel. You don’t find many hotels here with an urban flair and unique style, so it was indeed a treat staying there. Thanks for commenting.

Loves the word “swanky”. You will adore the Moonrise. It’s a splash of urban contemporary right here in STL. I was impressed with the furnishings and decor and the fun atmosphere.
