February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Happy New Year: 2019 Is About to Be All About the Glow Girl

I hereby proclaim that 2019 is going to be all about the Glow Girl. Learn what a Glow Girl is, and how I plan of shining my light this year.

We are officially New Year status! 2019 has officially begun, and with it, all types of possibilities are ahead. It has been said that how you bring in the New Year is the foundation of how your year will go. If that is indeed the case, then 2019 is going to be full of promise—for all of us.

I hereby proclaim that 2019 is going to be all about the Glow Girl. Learn what a Glow Girl is, and how I plan of shining my light this year.

I didn’t have any immediate NYE plans, but made a last minute decision to spend the final two days of 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina. I wanted spend time with a special someone who has showed up for me in so many ways—it was my time to return the favor (hi, Will!).

I hereby proclaim that 2019 is going to be all about the Glow Girl. Learn what a Glow Girl is, and how I plan of shining my light this year.

During this quick trip, I learned more about myself and who I am growing into. No longer defined by other people’s version of success, I am now on a quest to write my own definition of it for myself. In mostly quiet, stolen moments of my trek, I felt overwhelmed with the options and possibilities that are open to me. It is a blessing to be able to have a choice of who you want to be, where you want to be, what you want to do—and do it freely.

What is a Glow Girl?

With this epiphany, I have titled 2019 as the year of the Glow Girl—she shines no matter where she goes, and she spreads her light to others, never shrinking down to make others feel comfortable. A Glow Girl also doesn’t dim the brightness of others, for she is an encourager, a cheerleader, and someone who helps people be their best selves, even when they can’t or won’t see it.

I hereby proclaim that 2019 is going to be all about the Glow Girl. Learn what a Glow Girl is, and how I plan of shining my light this year.

I have started my new journal after re-reading last year’s entries, and I plan on writing in it each day of 2019. This way I can chart my progress (or lack thereof), peaks, valleys, thoughts, feelings, etc.

I challenge you to also do the same.

Now that 2019 is here, let’s all work to do the work it takes to simply be a good human being. Spend the next 364 days living, loving, sharing, communicating, and being as authentic as you can be. No more shrinking violet—no more suppressing—no more internalizing. A true Glow Girl emits light even when it is hard to do so.

I hereby proclaim that 2019 is going to be all about the Glow Girl. Learn what a Glow Girl is, and how I plan of shining my light this year.
