The Cubicle Chick on Huffington Post Live: Turning Into Your Mother

Last Thursday, I was invited to be a part of a panel of guests on Huffington Post Live. The segment, “Most Women ‘Turn Into’ Their Mothers at 31′ was a fun conversation about how we, as much as we don’t like it, are morphing into our mothers before our very eyes. Whether it’s hand-gestures, parenting anecdotes, style, or our personality, many of us are becoming our mothers. The horror!

I was approached to be on the segment due to an article that I wrote for my client, Completely You, last year. Entitled Are You Turning Into Your Mother, I talked about some of the similarities I have found between my mother and I. I am adopting her hand-gestures, her sayings, and her motherly ways at times.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Last week while talking to my daughter for the umpteenth time about the importance of cleaning up her room, I felt a bit of familiarity that was too close to home. I began to have that dramatic shrill that my mom used to have when she chastised me about something. My hand was placed firmly on my hip and my finger was moving to-and-fro as if I was painting in the air, and I had to pause. These are the same exact things my mom used to do when she chewed me out. I’m turning into my mother!

I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t be the mom my mother was. Not that my mom wasn’t a great mom — she was. I guess I just was determined to do things differently. Like the time she made me sit at the table for three hours because I refused to eat the microwave cheeseburger she made me for dinner. I totally thought to myself then that if my children didn’t want to eat their food, I would make them something else, because they have to eat something!

It was this article which prompted one of the producers of the piece to reach out to me to be on the segment. I have had the honor of being on several Huffington Post Live pieces, and this one was a fun one to be a part of. My kids also got a chance to be a part of the segment as well in a special way, too.

You can watch the segment below. Hilarity is sure to ensue:

This is so cool! I’m definitely turning into my mother. It freaks me out everytime I catch myself doing something exactly like her. When we’re together, we sound like twins because I’ve picked up so many of her phrases and we say them at the exact same time.

As for me, I think me and my mother are opposite. But to be honest, if this is really the case, i’d love to be like her. She is so devoted when it comes to us her kids. I love her so much. Ever since, she’s been the father and mother to us. I can really say that she’s the best!

Kara, it’s the same way with me. My mom and I are polar opposites, but I do think I’ve developed her sassy attitude, which my daughter is now also developing from me. Such a vicious cycle. LOL. Thanks for commenting.
