“Mommy, What Is Earth Day?”

The following is a blog post I wrote last year regarding Earth Day. My daughter is 7 this year and has been celebrating Earth Day all week! I’m so glad to have such a eco-conscious child.

—————————————————————

My six year old daughter is extremely excited about Earth Day. Her teacher and classroom have been discussing Earth Day for the past week or so, and she has really gotten into the act.

When I picked her up from school last week, she asked me, “Mommy, what is Earth Day?”

I explained to her in the simplest terms that Earth Day is just one day, but that we should pay attention to the earth each and every day by recycling, finding different sources of energy, helping to stop pollution, and helping animals. I said, “Earth Day is about loving our earth each and every day.”

I am very impressed that my daughter, already at a young age, is concerned about the earth and our effects on it. She has been busy going around our home and adding items to our recycle bin, turning off the lights when she leaves the room, and we even checked out a book at the library about how to make a compost.

I hope that this Earth Day, we all learn to treat our planet better each and every day.

Below are a few posts that I wrote over the past week concerning Earth Day and ways you can live  greener and more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Yes, my 8 yr old son was also very excited. I totally agree about it's one day but we do it all year (like Mother's Day, it's one day everyone tries to show appreciation but we really do it, or should do it, all of the time.

My son's class is in charge of recycling at the school this year, and taking the paper and plastic to our recycle bin at home is one of the chores he volunteered for. I do the glass, just to be on the safe side. I love seeing children so enthusiastic about taking care of the planet, gives me hope for the future.

Score for our "socialist" public education system and all the hardworking teachers!
