Letter to My Tween: As You Start Middle School, I Want You to Know

Letter to My Tween As You Start Middle School, I Want You to Know

Dear Chicklet,

Letter to my daughterI want to start this letter by saying that you are one amazing young lady. But I know you already know that. I have worked very hard since you came into this world to not only sing your praises, but to teach you your worth. The world out there is cruel and hateful and so undeserving of you—and yet you still smile and laugh and radiate such a warm and caring spirit. I am in awe and wonder at the things you say and do; not because they are beyond my comprehension, but because you show me everyday that there is a God. For you were created in His image. And you rightfully play your position.

Sixth grade now marks a turning point in your life. No longer an elementary school kid, you are stepping into the big leagues with middle school. You still call me mommy, play with dolls, and showcase an innocence other kids your age don’t have. But you are also growing by leaps and bounds. You are almost as tall as me with long legs like your Daddy and an elegance about you. You are sensitive, which concerns me since middle school can be a cutthroat time. And yet, I am not worried one bit about you. I know you will persevere and soar to new heights in your new school and surroundings. You will continue to share and help others while growing into the woman you one day will be. And you will use your wisdom to make good decisions and choices.

I often wonder what I did to deserve such a sweet daughter. I always told you to utilize your gifts; and I know you have so many. You are artistic, creative, innovative, and forward-thinking. But you are also a giver. And like me, you will use that gift to change the world. In middle school, I want you to use this gift to be a leader for others.

Starting Middle SchoolPeople will criticize you. Many will doubt you. Some will even taunt you. But you must remain true to yourself, despite what the mob mentality may think or say. You are proud to be a Girly Girl Nerd Tomboy as you call yourself—and I love that. I love how you already are tuned in to who you are and what you bring to the table. I wish I had your self-assuredness at your age.

I’ve seen you grow over the summer into a confident girl who isn’t afraid to go with the grain. Girl, please never lose that quality. Never shrink to let someone else appear bigger. Never stop learning, growing, thinking, and moving forward.

Middle school is a new lane, but one I feel you will adapt to quickly. I won’t sugar coat things, as you may have some good days and some bad ones. But always keep your head in the game and remember that we are here for you no matter what. You’ve got a whole team behind you rooting for you, loving on you, encouraging you, and keeping you lifted in prayer.

I can’t believe you are officially starting sixth grade! Time flies, and my love continues to grow. And I love you more than you will ever know.

Love Always,

Mommy.

I’ve had many of the same thoughts about our little man. He is growing up so fast, and he is constantly surprising us! 🙂
