10 Things Working Moms Should Do This Labor Day Weekend

Cheers to the Labor Day weekend! Here's a healthy and robust list for working mamas to make sure that you get the most out of the holiday.

It’s official—the Labor Day weekend is upon us. With the passing of Labor Day signals the end of summer and the start of the autumn season as kids head back to school. Labor Day has been one of my favorite holidays because it always lands on or around my birthday. So as we celebrate the end of summer and our hard work, it’s also a time where I get a year older.

And while the BBQ’s, family gatherings, parties, and close of summer events plague the holiday weekend, I want to make sure that us working moms get the most out of Labor Day. This is a time of year that is both symbolic and restorative, giving us a farewell to long, summer days, while ushering in cooler temperatures, brown and orange leaves, and a Fall season which we are sure to love.

Make sure you partake in these 10 Things Working Moms Should Do This Labor Day Weekend:

Sleep in

Summer has been a busy time for you and you might have not gotten enough rest. Having at least 7 hours of sleep is a wonderful way to stay healthy, lose weight, and stay de-stressed. This weekend, sleep in without feeling guilty, as those parties and get togethers will be there when you wake up. Ignore your alarm clock if you can and get in some Z’s—your body will thank you.

Write a letter

While you are maxing and relaxing, why not actually pen a letter to a friend or relative? Better yet, Grandparent’s Day is coming up next week—make sure you buy some cards for the Grandparents in your life and add a little note in the card about how special they are to you. And actually mail them the old fashioned way.

Have a ‘Guilt Free’ meal

Yes, most of us are watching our weight. But this weekend, allow yourself at least one guilt free meal where you don’t count your calories. You deserve it! (and after your guilt free extravagance, return to your normal eating pattern)

Laugh

Surround yourself with people who make you smile and laugh. This should be a time of epic happiness for you. Leave the drama drones by the wayside.

Let someone else do the cooking

If you can, let someone else tend to the grill. Offer to bring over meat to cook, or other items for the BBQ, but let someone else do the hard work.

Read a book

Those books you’ve been wanting to read are stacking up. Take a few hours out of your day to read a book you’ve been wanting to finish. It’s a great way to relax and unwind.

Turn off technology

As hard as this may be, this is a good thing, especially during a holiday weekend. Turn off your smartphone, laptop, and tablet, and spend time with people in real time in person. Those emails will be there on Tuesday. And I promise—you won’t be missing anything.

Be spontaneous

Not everything has to be planned this weekend. Make sure to do something spontaneous. Go to the movies alone, or surprise a friend by dropping off flowers at their home. Do something that is completely unscheduled.

Bond

This weekend was made for family. Take the time to bond with your brood over a board game or a movie night in the family room. Enjoy spending time together uninterrupted.

Don’t think about work

Yes, it is Labor Day, but you don’t have to spend it thinking about “labor”. Excuse your mind for the Labor Day weekend from thinking of work, unless you have to. You will get more enjoying focusing on the people around you.

I hope you all enjoy your Labor Day weekend, and do some of the things on my list.
