Empty Nest Series: She’s a Graduate Class of 2022

I've got an official graduate on my hands. In my next installment of my Empty Nest Series, I'm waxing poetic about Class of 2022.

Welp–it’s official. The young woman who you’ve been addressing as The Chicklet is a full-fledged high school graduate.

When I first started TheCubicleChick back in 2009, my daughter was five years old and in kindergarten. Today, she is an eighteen year old woman who will be attending St. John’s University this fall. She’s literally grown up here right on my blog.

I am so grateful for her internet aunts and uncles and cousins who’ve loved her from afar and cheered her along the way. This village of mine has been integral to my motherhood and sanity. Now, as she crossed over the threshold from childhood to adulthood, I believe she has everything she needs to thrive.

Her graduation wasn’t without a few hiccups, however, My son who flew in to see her walk across the stage tested positive for Covid right after he landed here in St. Louis, so he wasn’t able to see her graduate in person. I hated that for him, but sometimes life be life-ing. He’s fully vaccinated and boosted so he didn’t get very sick and he was able to see her get her diploma virtually.

It was wonderful having our family and friends celebrate Little Miss Sunshine and all of her accomplishments. Laylah graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.89 GPA with plenty of service and citizenship awards. She will also walk into college with a half of a semester worth of college credits thanks to her dual enrollment during her senior year of high school.

With each and every passing minute, she takes one step closer to moving to New York to go to school and I get one step closer to being an empty-nester. I am not sure what is going to happen on August 27th which is freshman move-in day at her school. She’s been with me for 18 years–what will my life look like post The Chicklet being under my roof?

I guess time will tell.

Right now, I will bask in the glory of being the mom of an incredible human who has given me smile after smile. I’m thankful for the time I have to love on her before she goes away.

These are the times, my friends. I’m enjoying this part.
