Tyler Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls’ Trailer Sparkles As We Anticipate Release

There were so many things said by entertainment and couch potato pundits when it was first leaked that filmmaker and sometimes controversial director Tyler Perry would be adapting the 1975 play written by Ntozake Shange called ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’.

How could Tyler ‘Madea’ Perry make a such a serious type of film when he is too busy shucking and jiving on screen as a woman?

Tyler, say it isn’t so! Why are you attempting to recreate the magnificence that was ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’? Have you no shame.

Perry is dead wrong for making a film based off of ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’. He needs to stick to his gospel coonery.

But who would’ve thought that he would take this work of incredible fortitude and make us proud by capturing the essence of the original Broadway play? When I began reading the buzz on Twitter regarding the release of the official trailer for the film ‘For Colored Girls’, I was reluctant to click the link. But I decided to give it a shot and was amazed at what awaited me. Dramatic. Riveting. Poignant. Chilling. Those are just a few words that hit my tongue when I watched the theatrical trailer. If I wasn’t looking forward to seeing the movie before, I am counting the days until its release.

The original Broadway play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’ was a series of 20 poems focusing on 7 women known by ‘colored’ names: ‘The Lady in Purple’, ‘The Lady in Yellow’, and so on and so forth. The colors of their names played a metaphor for the color of their skin, for they were women with all different colors of brown. It has won numerous awards including Tony for Best Play in 1977. The play dealt with abortion, rape, and other issues that affected women THEN and NOW.

The film stars a bevy of greats in acting and entertainment. Acting in the movie are: Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Thandie Newton, Jurnee Smollett, Kerry Washington, Michael Ealy, Macy Gray and Omari Hardwick.

Trailers can be misleading (I found that out recently when I viewed The American starring George Clooney which was a total dud), but I have  a feeling that Perry wanted to serve up a little comeuppance in his directorial project. ‘For Colored Girls’ appears to be a riveting picture with solid acting and scenes of mood. I cannot wait to see it!

Are you planning to see Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls’ when it hits the screen on November 5th?

The first Tyler Perry film that I could not only tolerate but recommend was “Daddy’s Little Girls.” The plot was simplistic, as all of his stories are, but the performances were mighty fine. Thanks for the first look at the “for Colored Girls” trailer. I saw the original play, and now, I’m looking forward to the film. I hope he pulls it off.

Jurnee Smolett is not in the movie. I think your are speaking Tessa Thompson. However I went to a screening Tuesday the 26th and the movie is BEYOND awesome. Take your tissues.

Michelle, thanks for the correction. I plan on seeing the movie Friday when it is released. I have yet to hear a person who has seen the movie say they didn’t like it. Thanks for commenting.

The colors portrayed do NOT represent skin tones, they represent various trauma or difficulties in each woman’s life. For example, the lady in red consoles herself with casual sex to feel alive and avoid the hurt of being molested. The lady in yellow depicts a young girl losing her virginity too soon. I saw an early screening of the movie yesterday, IT’S EXCELLENT AND BEAUTIFUL. Please don’t let your prior opinions of Tyler Perry’s work make you miss out on such a gift.
