Reality Bites: My Visit to the New Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust Restuarant

In my Phaedra Parks voice. “Everybody knows that Sweetie Pie’s is a St. Louis institution”.

Yes indeed! So you know when I heard that Miss Robbie’s crown jewel in her Sweetie Pie’s dynasty was open for business, I made sure to get right over there. During the entire second season of the reality hit, Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s, we watched as Upper Crust went from a dream to reality. As a thriving St. Louis soul food business, Sweetie Pie’s has made it’s mark on the city and on the world. So much so that the restaurant was given its own reality show on the OWN cable channel. It has become one of their most popular and highest rated programs, and just ended their second season this past weekend.

There wasn’t much pomp and circumstance surrounding the opening. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know it was open until I saw an article about it on the St. Louis Business Journal. I am not sure why Miss Robbie and the crew didn’t have a big grand opening with a lot of fanfare (maybe that will come later), but the doors became officially opened to the public last week.

Located in the Grand Center area of midtown St. Louis, Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust is in a prime location. Surrounded by the Fabulous Fox Theater, the St. Louis Powell Symphony Hall, St. Louis University, The Black Repertory Theater, and other local fine arts establishments, if run properly, The Upper Crust will rake in the dough. Soul food with the theater, arts, and entertainment, people will rush to get their fix before and after shows and exhibitions.

I found Upper Crust to be a nice size (it holds a dining room area, bar, patio, and banquet space). I was expecting the menu to be different than the other two locations (the Mangrove location and the original West Florissant location are both cafeteria style), but it had the same menu and had an identical menu of items. No swanky menus or custom service. On the show, Miss Robbie mentioned the menu and offerings may be different, but perhaps that will be something that will be incorporated later.

I ate my usual fare: baked chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes with cornbread. The baked chicken, potato salad, and cornbread were awesome. The mashed potatoes weren’t my favorite.

Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust was busy and bustling, as I am sure many people came out to get their look at the new location. I also got to see Miss Robbie, Charles, and grandson Andre, who were all working hard (sorry, no pics of them. I didn’t want to appear to be a groupie! lol).

Below are my photos of my food and the surroundings of Sweetie Pie’s Upper Crust. I will be visiting again. And is definitely worth the trip!

Ms. Robbie is a sweetheart. I’m so very happy for her and all that she’s doing. I haven’t had a chance to stop by Upper Crust yet but I plan to get there soon. I wish her more and more success. What a Blessing!
