February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

My Grown Up Christmas List

I’ve been spending way too much time in the mall the past several days and of course the Christmas shopping push is in full swing everywhere I turn. I haven’t started my holiday shopping yet and I already feel like I’m running behind even though Christmas is over a month away. In any event, while checking out the shoes and cosmetics at Macy’s with my TCC Internet Promoter and shopping partner Ashley (@ms_july8th), I saw this cute little display in which you could write your letter to Santa and send it off to him with your Christmas list. Of course my 5 year old wanted to send hers in “extra early” as she called it and it got me to thinking about what I wanted this year.

Below is my”Grown Up Christmas List”

  • A iPod Touch (I have a Nano now which no longer lights up when used)
  • A $100 gift card to Sephora
  • A $150 gift card to Bakers or Macy’s for shoes
  • A spa gift certificate for a facial
  • The New Blackberry Bold II (or Onyx) for T-mobile
  • Pampered Chef cookware
  • Cooking lessons at Le’Ecole Culinary
  • A Real Simple magazine year subscription
  • A Southwest Airlines gift card

In addition to these items, I would also like the following:

  • The end to ALL wars and world peace. For all of our soldiers in all countries to come home alive to their families
  • Health and happiness to everyone
  • For the remembrance of what Christmas and the holiday is really about
  • For President Obama to have a better year in the Oval office than he did this year
  • For the end to racism and hatred, bigotry, and homophobia
  • For the end of all diseases and sickness
  • To continue to be blessed and to be thankful for everything

What is on your grown up Christmas list? Feel free to share!
