February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Shrek the Musical Hits the Stage at the Fabulous Fox Theater

Last week, I had the opportunity to not only interview Sarah Peak, a player in the traveling production of Broadway’s Shrek the Musical, to see firsthand this movie brought to life on the stage by Dreamworks. The Fabulous Fox Theater was packed on Saturday evening, the opening night of the production here in St. Louis.

I adore musicals, but I was a little nervous about seeing Shrek the Musical. Knowing that this movie wasn’t a musical when it was released, I wondered how it was going to play live with songs.

As the curtain opened, my six 6 old daughter and my 16 year old  began clapping uncontrollably, in anticipation of the opening dialogue. To my surprise, the laughs began almost right away and the music was a great element that held the play together.

Shrek the Musical follows the original Shrek movie, as Shrek is commissioned to save Princess Fiona from the castle and bring her to the Prince to marry. But on their quest  to trek to the castle alongside Donkey, Shrek and Fiona fall in love. Neither one not wanting to admit their feelings, and Fiona wanting to break her spell of being turned into an ogre after sunset, she agrees to marry the prince.

Yet we all know what happened next!

Let me tell you that I so enjoyed this production! Eric Petersen who plays Shrek keeps the same essence alive that first made audiences smile by Mike Meyers. And Alan Mingo who played donkey was a dead ringer vocally to the movie’s Eddie Murphy. Fiona played by Holly Ann Butler was done with a stunning grace and talent that made the audience take notice. I enjoyed her performance immensely!

The players of this production put in great work in the musical and dance numbers. Each second of this play was filled with an entertaining one liner or great song! And let me tell you that the closing number of the play is most memorable!

You must take your family to see Shrek the Musical. It is appropriate for all aged audiences and is a spectacle of entertainment and joy that you must see firsthand. Shrek the Musical is now playing at the Fabulous Fox Theater as part of the US Bank Broadway Series through September 26th. Make sure you get your tickets now and enjoy the fun!
