The Cube Style Icon: Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge was a woman before her time. Though her life was cut tragically short, her legacy and impact has been felt by millions of women who have adopted her grace, style, and swag. Icons like Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, and Whitney Houston all have attributed their style and their glamour to Ms. Dandridge. An angel on the screen and stage, Dorothy rocked the red carpet and the movie screen like no one else and since she left us, no one has been able to encapsulate her raw beauty and effortless luxe fashion.

Here are just a sampling of a few of my favorite Dorothy Dandridge photos. She shined even brighter than the lens allowed, but these pictures give a glimpse into her rare and timeless beauty.

*squeals* I love Dorothy Dandridge!!!! Her style & influence will continue to live on. I just wish there was more done with her image in terms of marketing. There are thousands of coffee table books about other screen legends, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Rita Hayworth, etc but it is difficult to find Dorothy Dandridge items. I think her image, legacy, & life are important for young black girls to see and learn about. Great post!!!

Kim—Unfortunately because she was of color, we don’t have all of the photo history and style ambiance that we have with the other women you mentioned. I guess it is up to us, her fans, to keep her memory alive. I know there are thousands of rare photo of her around that haven’t been published yet. I cherish the day that those photos will come to life and give us the opportunity to see and share them. I would love for my daughter to be able to see that we have been FLY for a loooonnnggg time. We are Hollywood royalty!

I can hardly stand to think about Dorothy Dandridge. She was an amazing talent, but such a tragic life. She was treated so abominably in both her personal and professional life, underrated, underappreciated and it’s just so sad. What she was able to do with so little opportunity and such a lack of support is incredible. Just think about what her life could have been had she had people in her life that loved her and encouraged her without wanting anything from her. Very sad.
