February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Video: Interview with Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa Price at Macy’s Event

Editor’s Note: The video has been added to this post below. Sorry for the delay, as I was having internet connectivity problems while traveling. Thanks for your patience.

Hi! I’m Javania, and I was given the opportunity to interview Lisa Price, Founder and President of Carol’s Daughter natural hair and skin care products in Danyelle’s absence (she was having fun in Miami at SheCon).  I was nervous and a bit scared because I did not want to disappoint—- I am my own WORST critic.

The event, “Celebrate the Color of Beauty” was held at Macy’s in Fairview Heights, Illinois at St. Clair Square.  The afternoon was full of beauty, fashion, and natural hair.  MAC artists showed the guests how to apply make-up correctly, INC showcased the summer’s fashion in a show hosted by Tammie Holland from St Louis’ 104.9, and Nancy Calkenbusch was there to assist with bra fittings.

Lisa Price spoke about current and new products, how she started off (17 years ago in her apartment), and then opened the floor for  questions.  The type of questions asked, includes how to eliminate dry hair, having healthy relaxed hair, and the best shampoo for dry scalp and etc. Every question was answered with a product from Carol’s Daughter. (I LOVE IT)

One young lady asked Price for advice on starting a business and she offered up her time afterwards to speak to her one on one so that people could get their hair questions in.

In my conversation with Lisa Price we spoke about how the new ad campaign with Solange Knowles, Cassie, and Selita Eubanks came about. She also talked about how she feels natural hair is a movement and not a fad (I felt that it was, but she promptly schooled me), and shared some of her success tips.

Meeting Lisa Price was an honor.  She is truly an inspiration for young entrepreneurs such as myself.  She has a true willingness to help people and a desire to see others achieve their dreams as she has. Overall, I had a great time at the event. The conversation between Mrs. Price and myself  is below. Enjoy the interview!
