February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Photo Fab: 6th Annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Awards Luncheon

6th Annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Awards LuncheonThe 6th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards Luncheon took place yesterday afternoon, and by the looks of the photos and coverage I’ve been watching, it was EPIC! Each year, Essence alongside Lincoln Motor Company, and sponsors such as L’Oreal, Target, Geico, and Smartwater recognize several women in the entertainment and film industry who have inspired us on so many levels with their talent and craft.

This year’s celebrants were: Oprah Winfrey, Gabrielle Union, Naomie Harris, Mara Brock Akil, Alfre Woodard, and Quvenzhane Wallis. What a fab group of women who are really doing things in a positive way!

The event, which takes place every year during Oscar week, is a definitive milestone for women of color. I followed several women who attended the soiree (including bloggers Afrobella and Karen Civil), and their tweets and photos from the luncheon made me so proud to be a woman of color. I am so proud of these ladies who are doing it big, and as a mom of a young African American girl, I love that I can share the wonderful work these woman do with pride.
