Reel Review: Disney’s Planes Soars High For Family Fun

Disney Planes Movie PosterThe Chicklet and I enjoy going to the movies together. I must admit that I love having a little one because it gives me an excuse to go to movies that I would feel silly for going to if I didn’t have a child. On Tuesday, she and I were invited to an advanced screening of Disney’s newest animated feature, Planes. While we both saw plenty of previews and buzz about the movie, we didn’t know quite what to expect.

Cars was the first film that I took my daughter to the movies to see, so we knew that it was going to be something like that. Instead of talking cars of course, Planes features a group of talking airplanes who all have unique personalities and issues. The film centers around Dusty who is a crop duster plane that wants to compete with other planes in the Wings Around the Globe competition. Of course, no one thinks he can pull this off, so it’s totally about an underdog trying to compete with the big dogs.

But the film is also about overcoming fear and naysayers, even when it may make you question yourself. I love that Planes, like other Disney movies, has a “comeback” story that can resonate with kids and adults alike. And the cast of characters including Dusty’s friends Dottie, Chug, El Chupacabra, Skipper, Bulldog, and more, we see why being a loyal friend is more important than winning.

My daughter’s favorite character was not Dusty, but his flying friend El Chupacabra, whose unknowing funniness kinda sorta steals the show. There is a scene that he is in that is totally hilarious, and my daughter could not stop laughing. She also enjoyed seeing it in 3D. The “action” scenes were amazing seeing them in 3D.

I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite Disney films as of late. I think it has something for each family member to take away from it, and it even has a few “adult” jokes that only we would catch. Makes it enjoyable for everyone.

Disney’s Planes hits theaters Friday, August 9th, 2013. There is also a Planes video game and soundtrack, that was released Tuesday, August 6th.
