The 90s were a time! The fashion, music, movies, and overall culture were everything! I came of age during this wondrous age, and as I grow older, I long for the aesthetic that was this memorable era.
Look, this was way before algorithms, social media, BBLs, and the quest for perfection. Women in this era weren’t just ’90s fine. They were confident, poised, and true to themselves. No matter if we were in baggy clothing or a fitted dress, we were sexy without putting it all out there.
Now that I am 50, I want to use this decade as my muse. My style is now inspired by what I consider the Golden Era of Culture, and tapping into the looks, fashion, and makeup that is considered 90s fine.
Here’s a look at my current throwback ’90s style.
Burgundy and Berries
Throwback 90s style means darker lip hues like burgundy, berry, and plum. Women weren’t afraid to experiment with color, and the darker, the richer, the better.
I am known for my lip game, so this particular style cue from the ’90s isn’t that hard for me to achieve. My collection is already filled with these colors, so I guess I’ve been stuck in this era when it comes to my lippie.

The color seen in this photo above is Mac Powder Kiss Lipstick in Burning Love.
Grunge
No matter the season, in the nineties, flannel was everywhere as a unisex trend. No matter where you were culturally, if you were a rocker, a rapper, a pop songstress, or a country crooner, flannel and the grunge look was in. Dressed up or down, it was a look that spoke volumes.

I’m still a flannel girl, and I love to wear it wrapped around my waist to accent my look or add a little color.
Shortcut
Taking a shortcut to a short cut was a huge trend in the 90s. While the 80s were all about big hair and long tresses, in the 90s, women chopped off their hair to showcase shorter, hipper styles. Janet, Whitney, Madonna, and others all adopted shorter hairstyles during this era, influenced by women like Halle Berry, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, and Toni Braxton.

I opted to go back to a shorter cut, and I love the results. I look forward to rocking various 90s-inspired cuts in 2025 and beyond.
Natural
Women are giving face currently, and having a beat face with foundation, concealer, bronzer, and contour is an everyday thing. Back in the 90s, that wasn’t so. While we wore makeup, it was less about “giving face” with a complete beat, and more about playing up and accentuating your features in a more nuanced fashion. The result was a more natural look.

Sephora gets plenty of my coins, but in this era, I am taking a more natural spin with makeup. A bold lip and lined eye are my staples, the same go-tos from the ’90s.
So there you have it–my rundown of my throwback to 90s style and fashion.
