Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Sleep is a very important component of living a healthy life. If you are not getting enough sleep, it can cause health problems as well as fatigue. While listening to NPR today, I leanred that most Americans do not get enough sleep, and out of those individuals, many suffer from sleep disorders which cause restlessness and sleeplessness.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which you literally stop breathing while you sleep. Those with sleep apnea snore, which can cause your bed partner to also lose sleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause major health complications. Insomnia and narcolepsy are two other types of sleep disorders.

If you are often tired throughout the day or wake up tired, you are probably not getting enough sleep. Most adults need eight hours of continuous sleep, although it varies depending on activity.

To promote healthy sleeping, remove your television from your bedroom. According to professionals, your bedroom should be used for just that. Dr. Oz states that your bedroom should be used for sex and sleep only. Televisions, computers, and other distracting electronic devices and materials should be removed from the bedroom.

There is medication that may help induce a better sleep for you as well. Consult your physician to see if medication could help you. Also, there are sleep disorder clinics in which you may visit to determine if you have a sleeping disorder. While in the sleep clinic, you are monitored by clinicians and professionals for your sleep pattern, heart rate, and brain activity which can be studied to see if there is indeed a disorder when it comes to your sleeping pattern.

Getting the right amount of sleep is beneficial to your overall health. Make sure you are getting enough rest and sleep each and every night.

Our body needs sleep for a reason. anything that detracts from that will only cause us pain and suffering down the road.
