7 New Year Resolutions for Working Moms

I am a proponent of making changes no matter what time of the year it is, but there is something about the start of a new year that makes us feel warm and fuzzy about fresh starts and new beginnings. The new year could be just what you need to create some positive momentum!

In order to get the most out of this new start, check out these 7 New Year Resolutions for Working Moms. Read, share, and apply!

Give yourself grace

Us working moms are extra hard on ourselves. We feel like we have to do it all, and if we can’t, we’ve failed in some way. We need to retool our mindset to think differently. When our kids our spouses make mistakes, we give them grace. We are understanding and supportive and forgiving. We need to be this same way with ourselves. The same grace that we give others, we need to also give to ourselves. Stop beating yourself up all the time.

Ditch perfection

Perfection is so 10 years ago. Despite a social media conscious Instagram highly curated aesthetic, perfection is not what’s hot. Along with giving yourself grace, ditch the perfection and allow yourself to make mistakes. Doing so can also help our kids see that making mistakes is a part of life and they don’t have to try for perfection—a feat that no one, not even highly followed people on Instagram can claim.

Delay reactions

This is a huge lesson that I learned this past year. Reacting to anything negative or hurtful right in the moment sets you up to act out of raw emotion, which can damage. Instead, delay your reactions. Give yourself processing time to think through the situation, issue, or problem, and then allow yourself to react accordingly.

Schedule downtime

I’ve said this in my books and I will say it again. Scheduling downtime in your calendar is key for less stress. While you are busy making plans, booking meetings and conference calls, schedule in at least an hour of downtime weekly to focus on your self-care needs.

Listen to your kids

Your kids may be trying to tell you something. Listen to them. Don’t devalue your their input or feelings because they are children. Listening to them can help you be a better mom, and tend to their needs that may not be apparent.

Don’t work during family time

Speaking of kids, they study and learn from your behavior. If at all possible, don’t work during family time together. Try to work when they are asleep or doing homework, and make sure that your focus is on them —uninterrupted.

Use boundaries

Boundaries are the best way to navigate work and life. Make sure to instill them so that you are able to work smarter, not harder. Boundaries include not befriending coworkers, leaving work at work when at all possible, and saying no.

Turning over a new leaf and fine-tuning your habits while creating healthy ones are critical for us all. Utilize my New Year Resolutions for Working Moms and let them help you have the best year yet.
