Pastry chefs unite!
Last night, Bravo premiered the latest installment of the Top Chef series of programs called Top Chef Just Desserts, focusing on the last course of the meal that gives most savory chefs their most problems.
Hosted by Top Chef judge, Gail Simmons, the competition features 12 pastry chefs from around the country. Cooking sweet treats with creative flair and vision, this show calls out to the sweet tooth in all of us.
Of course, this reality competition wouldn’t be any fun without a little drama. There are a few happy (and gay) pastry chefs who heckle and meow more than cats on a hot tin roof.
Top Chef Desserts is muck like its parent predecessor. There is a Quick Fire Challenge and then an Elimination Challenge in which the contestants have to whip up culinary delicacies, and have them voted by a panel of seasoned judges. The chef not up to snuff gets the boot.
I found Top Chef Desserts to be much like Top Chef. It’s got talent, cooks, food, and a state of the art kitchen facility with plenty of product placement for Bravo’s evident sponsors. If you are into desserts, cooking, drama, or reality competitions, Top Chef Desserts is for you.
What I could do less of is the over expressing of some of the contestants. Everyone wants to be the bitch, the son of a bitch, the villan, the DIVA. Be yourselves, people, and let your creations and desserts speak for themselves.
I can see the winner of the competition being able to leverage their good fortune into a career of being a preeminent pastry chef, traveling the country teaching, speaking, and even hosting their own program. I will be watching the series to see what develops.
