February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Did You Know August Is National Sandwich Month?

While perusing the web last night, I learned that August is National Sandwich Month. I am a sucker for a well made sandwich, let me tell you. A lover of finely prepared food, I enjoy noshing on complicated recipes with hard to say names, but there is nothing on earth like a well made sandwich.

My sixteen year old does not enjoy sandwiches unless they are store made from Subway, Quiznos, or the like, but my six year old appreciates a great sandwich just like I do. Not only does she enjoy eating them, but making them as well. I am constantly looking online to find new sandwich ideas to try so that we don’t get stuck in the same ole boring sandwich rut.

Here are some of our favorite homemade sandwich treats:

Grilled cheese: This is my favorite sandwich of all time. It can be eaten any season, matched up with a cool salad or a hot bowl of tomato soup. I make my grilled cheese sandwiches on honey wheat bread, applying butter to both sides of the bread before I toast. I also utilize a combination of cheeses (usually Swiss, cheddar, and Monterrey jack), but I’ve also been known to make them with smoked Gouda or goat cheese. I top it off with a fresh slice tomato and voila, you’ve got yourself the world’s best grilled cheese sandwich.

Tuna Melt: Do not laugh—I do not know how to make tuna salad. I always buy my ready made from Trader Joe’s or the local supermarket here. I normally use sourdough bread, sharp cheddar, and apply a liberal amount of the tuna salad and toast it in my electric skillet with a little coconut oil. It’s deslish!

Philly Cheesesteak: It took a while for this sandwich to grow on me, simply because all of the Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches I’ve had have been greasy. I use cut up pieces of breakfast steak and place it in sauté pan with onions splashed with a little A1 Steak Sauce for carmelization and place it on a hoagie roll. Served with some steak fries and you are set!

Restaurant Choice, Sammy Scott’s Sandwiches and More: If you friend me on Foursquare, then you know I eat at Sammy Scott’s at least twice a week. I am obsessed with their Simple Turkey sandwich which I have with turkey, mayonnaise, onion, lettuce (it comes with tomato as well but I nix that). Also, instead of having it with mozzarella cheese which is how it is described on the menu, I get mine with two slices of cheddar cheese. You are talking about heaven in your mouth! On the side, I have a bowl of their broccoli cheddar soup which is hands down the best broccoli cheddar soup in St. Louis. Delish!

Those are my top 4 top sandwiches. What are your favorites? Happy National Sandwich Month! Tell a friend! Oh, and for more trivia about the history of the sandwich, click HERE!

I love food in general, but sandwiches are great. I can’t pass up a good pb&j, grilled turkey & cheese, or tuna on wheat. Mmmmm

Grilled turkey and cheese does sound divine. I’ve got to make one of those this week for lunch.
