February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

I’m a Finalist for the RFT Web Awards—Best Personal Blog

I often write on my blog about being an awards show whore with an addiction to red carpet glitz and glam and all that is Ryan Seacrest. But who would’ve thought that I myself would be up for an award of my own? I guess that is indeed the case, because a bunch of my Kool-aid drinkers went and voted for moi for the 1st ever RFT Web Awards a few weeks ago, and I got word yesterday that I am a finalist for Best Personal Blog! How amazingly fabulous is that?!

St. Louis is such a close-knit social media community, and I am up against two really great chicks who I love—- @MilliGFunk from Smalltowngirlsguide and Stef from cupcakeproject.com. I don’t know the other two who were voted in my category well, but hell, I am in good company!

To those of you who voted for my “little blog that could”, thank you for the bottom of my little brown heart. I have had so many opportunities and positive feedback regarding my website and that makes me very warm and fuzzy! You are awesome! The Riverfront Times is a highly esteemed publication in this area (and its Backpage section makes me blush), so just to be mentioned in their pub gives me life!

The winners will be announced next Tuesday online and in the RFT print edition, so I will be popping Xanax until then.

You like me! You really like me!
