Money Matters: The Relationship with your Bank Should be One of Trust

When I was growing up, the elders in my family taught me to be skeptical of banks. They felt that keeping their money under their mattress was better than keeping it in a bank, I suppose because it was because they thought someone would take it from them. I understood their rationale—that was until I got old enough to understand how a bank works and the fact that monies deposited in a bank are FDIC insured. It was then that I began using a bank to deposit my weekly earnings as well as to try to save a nestegg that could be used to rainy days, hard times, or retirement.

Now that I am a mom of two, I work with my children so they understand the importance of saving money and using banks to their advantage. Both of my children have bank accounts and my oldest uses his quite often for depositing money in his savings. I want both of my kids to know that a relationship with your bank should be one of trust. You should do business with a bank that treats you well, has excellent customer service, and one that you can trust with your money.

I have been banking with my financial institution for a few years now and it is now the bank that my children use. I trust them with my money and feel that when it comes their customers, they have our best interests at heart.

When choosing a bank, its important that you feel comfortable with them handling your money. Do they have great customer support? Are they conveniently located? Do they have hidden fees and do they nickel and dime? These are all questions one should ask when choosing a bank.

Banking may not be the most fun activity one can participate in, but when you have a bank that you like and trust, it makes dealing with money matters all that easier.

Talking to your children about money and banking is something that all parents should do often. Preparing them for their future and for the tools in selecting the right bank to handle their finances is key, especially as they grow older.

How do you discuss money, banking, and finances with your children? Let’s discuss!

SunTrust has consistently ranked at the top for customer service for a good reason – they understand their customers. This lets them provide the right solutions to meet those customers’ unique needs. They believe banking solid is the key to living solid. See for yourself at livesolid.com, where you’ll find many great articles, tools and tips on everything from shopping to family to money.
