February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Dieting Woes- I’ve Hit A Plateau

Oh, it seems that my weight loss journey will never end. I was off and running beginning in March and lost a total of 21 pounds. I gained back one pound of that and now I am at a standstill aka, a plateau. What’s a girl to do?

I will admit that I haven’t been eating as well as I should. I have been eating out more than a person trying to lose weight should. It has been sandwiches and salads and such, but there is nothing like eating food that is freshly prepared at home. I know the key to weight loss and keeping it off is consistency, and I’ve dropped the ball where that is concerned. I am happy with losing the twenty pounds BUT it is short of my forty pound goal. I want to kick it into high gear by preparing more of my meals the low fat way. I also have signed up for a pole dancing fitness class ( do not giggle) and I am hoping to shed some pounds doing that. I wanted something fun that I would enjoy while working out and the pole dancing class seems to fit that bill. Of course I will be blogging about it and bringing you my results.

One thing that I can say is that I haven’t had a soda since February 21st. So it’s been almost four months since I have had a soda. YAY for me. The bad thing, though, is that I have begun to drink sweet tea (1 32 oz a day) that is not good for losing weight.

So I know what my marching orders are: eating more low fat meals that I prepare at home, work out at least three times a week, and limit the sweet tea intake. I think by sticking to those goals, I will get myself out of the weight loss rut I’m in.

Any other tips or ideas on how to get out of a weight loss plateau? Your feedback and comments would be greatly appreciated.

First, I think you look fantastic! I'm in no place to give advice, if you've gone 4 months without soda…well, the health benefits from that eclipse a number on a scale.

Sweet tea tip: In restaurants, you might try ordering half sweet & half unsweetened tea. I have done this for years because I don't like it without any sugar, or with fake sugar, but it's usually so sweet I don't even notice. Small change, but small changes add up.

The only other thing I can think of is, if you don't already, maybe use ankle weights around the house, like when you vacuum/mop, etc. The weather helps me, when it's so hot and humid the only things I really want to eat are lots of cold fresh fruit and veggies.

I hate to use tired cliche, but YOU GO GIRL!
