Actress Kerry Washington Goes Natural on November ‘Essence’ Cover

Actress Kerry Washington is so fabulous, it hurts. I remember when Kerry was starting out in her first flick, the Showtime movie ‘Lifted’. Now she has come into her own in the upcoming Tyler Perry film, For Colored Girls. In a Hollywood scene that is stockpiled with actresses and ingenues who are melanin challenged, Kerry’s brown beauty turns heads.

Kerry graces the cover of next month’s Essence magazine’s ‘Race in America’ issue. With awe inspiring natural curls and a body that won’t quit, this cover is most awesome.  There is no question here….Kerry is the haute-ness!

So are we supposed to make the assumption that Kerry’s hair is natural b/c she’s on the cover next to ‘Love Your Natural Hair’? Looks to me like she’s part of the race discussion, not necessarily the hair discussion.

That is a VERY good point. Here is the direct link of the Essence release of Kerry’s cover: http://www.essence.com/magazine/kerry_washington_november_cover_essence_magazine_race_in_america.php#ixzz11gdVmlBW

In terms of the “natural” statement, I have read before that Kerry does not relax her hair but rather gets it flat ironed. It seems on this cover, she has either A, let the curliness of her hair show or, B, is wearing a wig/weave or a combo or both.

Thanks for reading and commenting and keeping me on my toes 🙂

There is much discussion of this cover in the Twitter #naturalhair thread on this. The sentiment is that Kerry is wearing a weave/wig, and that many other celebs who are known for natural hair could have been chosen instead. As Tamara said, she may not be repping for natural hair, but it’s pretty prominent and many have taken notice.

I want to look at her hair and respond, but I can’t get beyond how shiny her chest looks. I do not like this image from a photography standpoint because I am not a fan of overly edited images. It looks like there is a skin-like piece of fabric placed in the center of her dress.

Danielle, I thought the pic looked fab but what do I know? LOL. That is probably why I suck at taking pictures. Daree, there is always a debate when natural hair is involved. Whether Kerry has a wig on or not, I am glad that Essence is opening up the dialogue about natural hair.

@DannielleJ who stated :It looks like there is a skin-like piece of fabric placed in the center of her dress.

I think she’s natural for the most part. The dress gives her a nice lift for a petite body. Besides if she doesn’t wear a dress like this she sags a little. She’s not 27 anymore, and it’s nice she doesn’t have implants like most hollywood actresses.

She is gorgeous, fake hair or no hair.

Kerry wears weaves, but she does have a nice grain of hair. Her mother has what they used to call “good hair” back in the day.
