February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

DIY Fab: Natural DIY Spa Treatments You Can Make at Home

Guest Blog Written By: Dr. Jeannette Kennedy

Okay, ladies. You know we’ve all had one of those days where you are just stressed and exhausted!  All you can think about is going to the SPA!  But it’s 8:00 PM and work awaits tomorrow.

Have I got a treat for you!

You can simply go to your kitchen and find most of the ingredients necessary for some awesome at-home treatments.  Extra perk:  All natural ingredients, no chemicals, and great results.  What more could you ask for?

Let’s start with a nice FOOT SCRUB.  all natural foot scrub

This one is so easy!  Simply combine:
1/2 cup coffee grounds
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup olive oil

and Voila!  Then scrub away!  Admittedly, this one is a little messy.  But the smell is invigorating and it leaves your feet feeling super smooth.  It is most definitely worth the cleanup.  (you can find many variations of this recipe online. Feel free to get creative or search to see what other people are doing….after all, variety is the spice of life!).

From COFFEE to CHOCOLATE.  Here is a lovely little FACIAL that you absolutely must try.
You will need:

natural facial2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp honey
1 tsp raw sugar
1 tsp olive oil

Mix it all together really well.  Apply it to a clean face and use circular motions to gently rub it into your skin for 45 seconds.  Rinse with warm water.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical about this one.  Rubbing chocolate into my face?  But I was left with super smooth skin that smelled delicious!

Last but not least:  THE DETOX BATH

Wouldn’t it be nice to soak in a tub that serves a dual purpose of washing away all the toxins we’ve accumulated during the day or week?  This bath will do the trick.  This mixture will make enough for a number of baths, so you can keep it in a pretty container in your bathroom for any emergency detox relaxation necessary.  You will need:

detox bath2 cups sea salt
2 cups baking soda
1 cup epsom salt

Mix all of these ingredients well.  After submerging in your bath and scrubbing off dead skin with a loofah, add 1/2 cup of the above mixture to your bath and mix it into the bath water.

For your first detox bath, limit your time to 5 minutes.  You can gradually work up to detoxing 30 minutes at a time.  Before you get out and towel off, take a quick rinse in the shower.

Less than 10 ingredients and you have a do it yourself home spa!  How’s that for luxury at home?

Bottom line here ladies:  take care of yourself.  If you don’t do it….who will?

I’ve never done any of these. I tend to just go to the spa but I think I’ll try the foot scrub soon. Great post.

I’ve got most of these items already in my home, so I will be trying them this week. The foot scrub and detox bath are just what the doctor ordered.

These sound absolutely awesome! I make my own stuff at home but most of the time it’s a lot of work (getting all of my salts, soaps, and essences). These sound like a nice, quick fix when you just want to be spoiled fast. Love it!
