Style Cues: What to Wear to a Holiday Party

‘Tis the season for holiday parties! Not only does this give you a built-in excuse to load up on candy canes and gingerbread, it is also an opportunity to don your most festive frocks (sequins, anyone?). Yet, if you’re decking the halls with the boss, just how festive can your outfit be? The general rule of thumb: nice is always acceptable, but let the venue of the party guide the degree of infused naughtiness. Here are tips and ideas for what to wear to a holiday party:

Daytime Office Shindig

If your office holiday party is during the day, start with your typical work uniform – slacks, a blouse, and a jacket or cardigan. Spread corporate cheer in holiday hues (red or green are classic choices) and jingle through the office in bright baubles!

After-Hours Corporate Event

The evening corporate fete is a chance to eat, drink, and be merry with coworkers. Maintain a sense of professionalism, especially if you are working your way up the ladder. Select a sparkly skirt and heels that showcase your holiday spirit, and top with an office-friendly blazer (that can be easily shed at the after-party). Hint: be mindful of how many spiked ciders you imbibe. Extra sugar cookies, however, are highly encouraged.

Tree-Trimming Party

Regardless of your faith, gathering with family and friends to decorate a tree amidst light bites and holiday tunes is always fun. Your outfit for this occasion should embody comfort and joy: cozy, colorful, and conducive to impromptu popcorn garland tosses. Jeans, wacky holiday socks, and a slouchy sweater are perfect for chestnut-roasting.

Holiday Sweater Theme Party

Feeling dubious about attending a party dedicated to your grandmother’s favorite reindeer-clad sweater vests and Santa-patterned turtlenecks? The key to staying cute while you literally wear your holiday spirit on your sleeve is to pair holiday garb with edgy accents – like an on-trend leather skirt and booties. Score a cheap vintage top from a thrift store, or check out stores like Target and Urban Outfitters for modern, clever statement sweaters.

I hope you get some style cues from these holiday fashion options. Tis the season to be stylish!
