FLOTUS Michelle Obama’s State Dinner Fashion: Alexander McQueen

A State Dinner at the White House is a rather large and momentous occasion. The President and First Lady hosted a fete for China’s president Hu Jintao. But most of the coverage I read glossed over that and discussed one thing—FLOTUS Michelle Obama’s dress.

Some fashion pundits were not pleased with Michelle’s Alexander McQueen gown (which I read on Mrs. O was designed by McQueen’s predecessor Sarah Burton)—the somewhat off the shoulder fit that accentuated Michelle’s wonderful shoulders and arms with splashy pattern was drastic for some. I, for one, love the dress and the fashion statement it makes. And the upswept ‘do and the black floral wrap made for an interesting combination that worked.

Who says that the First Lady’s wears have to be drab or predictable? I think that Michelle, giving a fitting tribute to McQueen’s legacy and fashion icon status, looked stunning and regal in her frock.

Sarah Burton is Alexander McQueen’s successor. Robin Givhan is a fashion journalist. I love this gown. It fits the First Lady wonderfully and it’s a very festive design. I can almost see the material used for one of those dragon dances. Such a grand way to pay homage to China and be ahead of the style game. Mrs. Obama takes fashion risks which I admire and encourage. It would have been a nice pop of color if President Obama had a pocket square in the same fabric as the First Lady’s dress, but that may have sent the fashion pundits into overdrive, lol!

@Kim, thanks again for the correction. Goes to show you should always research before posting. Anywho, I didn’t notice the swatch of fabric in the President’s pocket. Nice touch!

She looks fantastic! Haters will hate no matter what, so she should wear whatever she likes.

@Caitlin, you are so right. I do think people are entitled to their own opinions, but Michelle and her dress were haute. 🙂

Thanks for fulfilling my request. I do count on you for fashion news in addition to great tips, advice and family discussions. I personally like the dress. It screams fire! Sexy but intelligent and classy as is our First Lady.
