February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partn February is American Heart Month, and I’ve partnered with @MedIQCME and Duke Health to raise awareness about atrial fibrillation (AFib), also known as irregular heartbeat which affects 12 million people. My father was diagnosed with AFib and my family has a history of this condition, so I do my best to learn as much as I can about it.

I’ve learned that when the atrium’s squeezing becomes irregular, blood doesn’t flow as smoothly through the heart and clots can form. Those clots can travel to the brain, disrupting the oxygen supply and causing a stroke. People with AFib are at approximately 5 times greater risk for stroke than those with regular heartbeats. Stroke is a leading cause of death and also of serious, long-term disability. It is essential to get to a hospital quickly if you suspect a stroke in yourself or others.Learn the acronym FAST to recognize the signs of stroke:

F = Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T= Time. If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Frugal Fall Décor: Thrifty DIY Thanksgiving Serving Stand

Thrifty DIY Thanksgiving Serving Stand

Frugal Fall Décor Thrifty DIY Thanksgiving Serving Stand

With the Thanksgiving season approaching, you will find yourself scurrying about to prepare for all of your guests. Brunches, dinners, and even evening appetizers may be some of the events you are planning, so having the perfect table décor on hand will be essential. This year, skip the fancy department store serving pieces and try making your own instead. With a few simple ingredients, you can make your own thrifty Thanksgiving serving stand perfect for serving your appetizers, desserts, or any of the other yummy treats you are making on. Take a look at how easy it is!

Supplies needed:
Fall or Thanksgiving themed plate or platter
Wide mouthed glass or vase
Epoxy or high temperature hot glue
Twinkle lights

I was able to find all of the above supplies (with the exception of the glue) at my local thrift store. Look for simple fall themed or colored dishes and vases, which you can typically find for less than a dollar or so each. Twinkle lights can be found rather inexpensively too, even at your local dollar stores for just $1 a strand.

Directions:
1. Wash your glassware pieces well and dry them completely.
2. Apply some epoxy or hot glue to the underside of the vase. Press the bottom of the plate to the vase and press firmly for several seconds. You can even place a heavy book on top of it so that assists it in adhering well.
3. Allow a good hour for the piece to dry. You will now see the serving piece taking shape.
4. Arrange a cluster of twinkle lights under the glass. Plus them in and presto! Your serving piece is all ready for use!

If you don’t have a nearby outlet to plug the lights into, you can always use battery operated lights. Or, you can omit the lights altogether.

Don’t display your holiday treats on any old platter this holiday. Instead, give this thrifty Thanksgiving serving dish a try and see what you can come up with!
